Hello, I'm 17. I suffer from anxiety disorder and panic attacks. Sunday I went to the hospital for a panic attack and they gave me 1 mg of Ativan. They checked everything and said everything looked okay. The next day my doctor prescribed me 7.5 mg of Buspirone. I took it for the first time on Wednesday. Wednesday was also the same day my menstruation began. After my first time of taking it I experienced a rapid heart rate. I'm not sure if this is because of a panic attack, extreme anxiety, or menstruation. Also every time I stand up I get lightheaded or have a faint type feeling. I also don't know if this is from menstruation, extreme anxiety or panic attacks. I also lay down a lot. Could this play a part in this? I'm really scared. I wanted to know what do you think I should do. Anything will help. Thank you.

Hello and welcome!

I am glad you've found us, though sorry to hear of your anxiety and physical symptoms...this is worrisome and confusing, I know. :/

The sensations you describe sound like a mix of anxiety and the adjustment you are going to temporarily have from your medication...and of course an increase of anxiety due to hormonal fluctuations.

I recommend continuing your Rx, as the initial effects will phase out as your system adjusts...

...and adding in self help techniques to round out your management plan. We have great material in our Resources, at the top of the main forum page here. Let me know if you'd like some direction on where to start...and I'll be happy to help you!

Are you also planning to attend therapy? I do encourage you to do so...as medication and therapy is a winning combination in anxiety management for many people...and Rx alone can only help so much...

That's what I assumed it was but I wasn't too sure. My anxiety always forces me to believe it's something more serious. Also, I have just started attending therapy about 2-3 weeks ago and it's already helping. I really appreciate you replying so I can stop worrying so much. Thank you.

Welcome. I'm sorry you're having a tough time right now. I agree that the feelings you're having are also due to the startup of the new medication. Glad you're finding therapy helpful.

Everytime my menstruation is coming my anxiety gets worse. Its really normal to feel light headed and very normal to want to lay down while the adrenaline rises in your body. A medication start will also cause this. I think youre getting treatment is already a positive step into the right direction.

Are your periods heavy? My anxiety sky rockets when i menstruate because of hormones and my heavy periods make it so much worst.
