Brain Eating Amoeba in Pool Water at Amusment Park?

So I just got back from my local Amusement Park named Holiday World it's in Santa Claus Indiana. I went into the water park where I went in one of their water "roller coaster" rides and in one of the tunnels I had gotten a large amount of water up my nose. And after that I had a massive panic attack due to the horrible stories I have heard from water incidents involving the same thing. Should I be scared?? I know it is a chemically treated water ride and is in no way fresh or stationary water but I am still very afraid. I know I come onto this site with a lot of these kind of posts but I don't have anyone to talk to about this stuff, and no one really understands about my anxiety problems. Please help me call down please. My anxiety is through the roof.

Brain Eating Ameba are extraordinarily rare. The follow quote is from the CDC.

"Only 133 cases of the infection have been reported over the past 53 years, according to the CDC"

Usually, this amoeba lives in lakes and ponds with standing water - it would be unusual to get it in the midst of rapids. The fact that it is rare to begin with, mixed with the fact the water at the amusement park is treated and circulated it would be an extremely rare. Mathematically the odds of catching it are probably somewhere around hitting the Powerball Lottery. I wouldn't dwell over it. I actually went to Zoombezi Bay shortly after they announced the death of a local Columbus girl from a brain eating ameba, and admittedly I had similar thoughts.

Thanks for bringing up the statistics it has eased my mind. And sorry for misunderstanding your comment originally I thought you meant to say that someone had died from this microorganism at the water park in Ohio rather than you being afraid to go to the water park after you heard the news of the young girl from Ohio that contracted it from North Carolina whole white water rafting in river water. Sorry again about that, but I am glad I am not the only one that was worried about that. And thank you just for commenting it has helped calmed me down

Statistics seem to help me because I tend to be very mathematical / scientific minded so convincing myself logically helps, although its not always easy. You might find it useful. Think of statistics in the converse way, if 1 / 16500 people have condition xyz the chance is 0.006%, which means there is a 99.994% chance you don't have it. If I had those odds of winning the lottery I'd spend my entire savings on tickets!

no good at statistics but i had the same fear after i did a neti pot rinse with well-water, and i know the fear. but i did research at the time and it said like the others did, not from chemically treated water, it is extremely rare and only from brackish water usually found underground kept at the right (wrong?) temperature for the stuff to grow. and like has been said, ridiculously rare. oh any i lived through my well water neti pot incident by the way, but i would take the aching sinuses over panic any day!

The statistics speak for themselves. The death here in NC was a freak thing. There are so many things people worry about that we don't need to worry about...many things we wouldn't think twice about are more dangerous than things like brain eating amoeba.

I am glad the statistics have you feeling better. You will not be a victim of brain eating amoeba! I guarantee! Enjoy the water and know that it is one of the safer summer activities you can do.
