Back to work

I've had the last 3 weeks off of work while I started on Sertraline. It's been a pretty awful time but I'm done with most of the start up side effects (eating and sleeping still are iffy) and I'm left with random anxiety until the meds fully kick in.

My doctor wants me to try going back to work for 1/2 days 3 days this week. I know it's a good idea to get back to a routine, plus I'm not good at home alone all day. However, I've been battling the anxiety most of the day today and just can't shake it. My usual coping strategies just aren't helping.

I guess I could use some positive thoughts and any ideas for how to help with the added anxiety.

Hey Sara,

The first day back it is natural to feel some uncertainty...there is that unknown factor of how it will go, how you will react...ect.

So accepting that this is normal, and what anyone would be feeling is important.

At the same time...envisioning every aspect of your day going smoothly helps to ensure it will be so, so stay positive.

Repeating reassuring mantras is a great tool. Try saying statements such as these to yourself:

"I can handle anything that comes my way today."

"I am more than capable and equipped to do this job."

"I have my anxiety managed and I will have a successful return to work."

You've got this...just get through that first day...and I bet you will feel really good being back in the saddle! :) (I find work a wonderful distraction!)

Positive meditation before you get out of bed before going back into work.. I will be thinking of you and sending you strength.

I did it!!! And I'm doing it again tomorrow!! It wasn't easy but I'm so happy I did it. And the hugs from coworkers and students sure helped!!
