Hi guys. I have never been to an actual psychiatrist for meds for my anxiety. Only ever my pcps. I made an appt today to go to one and I have to see the nurse practioner. First question is that ok? Second: how do they know by my intake what meds will work. I'm afraid they won't listen to me about
my med fear because of lexapro almost killing me. I was on Zoloft when I was around 24 worked good for years still had some anxiety but I could function more. After that stopped I was put on Paxil same thing worked for a few years then quit. I went back to Zoloft and it didn't work that second time so sad idk Why I had a 3-4 year break from it. Then the lexapro that after 5 weeks I almost committed suicide it made me crazy and made me so depressed and made my anxiety 1000000 times worse. So now for 10 weeks I'm back on Paxil 40mg and it just doesn't seem to be working the second time either/ why?!?! I do take xanax too but it seems to be Losing its effectiveness after 7 years. Is there any hope for me left with meds? I don't want An snri the dr said After my bad experience with lexapro that I can't handle the the n word in the snri I can't spell the n woRd lol figured you guys would know what I mean 🙈. Even tho lexapro isn't an snri he said it has the n word in it and I can't handle it. Or maybe it was just the lexapro idk! Anyways I go in 2 weeks and I just wanna know what to expect and do you think I'll have a better chance with a psychiatrist even if it's his nurse practitioner than a regular pcp? Thank you sorry to rant. I have to get better so my therapy can help me more so I'm not sitting there not concentrating due to the level of anxiety. I want to enjoy life again without anxiety Beating me up and I've lost my zest for life i had.

Psych APNs can be very good, as they have specialized training in psychiatry as well.
And I really think that they will listen to you about
your history. Your history is very important when deciding treatment options, so any psych professional that wouldn't listen to a patient's history is no good. Remember that they want you to get well! That is their goal.
Just like anything else, there are good docs (or APNs in this case) and there are bad. Odds are you'll get a good one. And you have nothing to lose by attending the appointment. I hope you have a great experience!

IWTFGA,
Yes, a psychiatrist will have the best knowledge regarding anxiety Rx's. They have specialized in this specifically!
They also excel at prescribing combinations of meds,if indicated...in order to achieve the results and performance needed.
Inquiring about
taking an
Rx compatibility test
such as
GeneSight
might be worth your consideration...
...so bringing this up at your appointment could be a plan.
Let us know how your consult goes, okay?

Hi
Yes a psychiatrist is the best person to see regarding medication.
I would suggest you speak to them about
a drug called Mirtazapine (Remeron) which is not an ssri or snri and works well for anxiety.
Keep us posted

I hope things improve for you soon and you get your zest for life back 😊
While your waiting to get meds sorted and the right people to deal with could you try some relaxation coping skills.
Mantras work well for me they help me focus on the task in hand at that moment.
And i never go to bed without a good guided meditation to help relax my body and mind.... It gets easier to do , when your anxiety is at a high it can be difficult to concentrate on meditation but keep practicing and you will get there.
Good luck and i hope you get to see someone soon xx

A mantra can be any positive, empowering or reassuring statement that you choose!

Yes!!
...but management might be a better word. No one can ever be anxiety free...it is a part of the human condition after all.
However, with continued learning of new skills and continuing to grow in our treatment plans...
...we can absolutely find a good place of victory over the anxiety.:)

Aw bless you..
To feel anxiety free again and to enjoy things in life again is our goal. It definatley helps using this site.
And using my little mantras to get me on the right path.
I have been on a 2 Day refresher course this week for my public first aid licence... I could not have done it a couple of weeks ago.
This morning was worse than yesterday and i was getting very uncomfortable in my seat in a room of 15 people it wasnt just cuts and bruises today it was real hard core stuff and Im sat there thinking this is not good for someone with health anxieties and i really wanted out of there... so i was telling my self in my head I am strong.. I am calm.. I can do this.. before long i was laughing at the situ.... I have to deal with people daily with heart attacks, strokes, cancer etc etc just because i was picking up new methods and equipment didnt mean it would happen to me.
I talked myself out of a full blown panic and came home with my new certificate and license... SO WE CAN overcome the anxiety and panic WE are in charge of our wellbeing we sometimes just need that extra bit of support.
You can and will soon feel the better side of life xx

That's awesome! Way to go!!! I hope I get to where I can work again. Working definitely helps! Sitting home dwelling on anxiety only feeds it and it's no fun! I did go walk 5 miles with a friend today as I've been reading on here so many people say walking helps them because it releases the feel good hormones. 😊

Thats fantastic .. a feel good factor... It all helps to get a stronger healthier happier you xx
Getting back to work for me was just what i needed I was starting to get on my own nerves moping about
lol So the routine helped.
The walk was a good idea , I have been doing that too at weekends and its a sense of acheivement. I only did a short walk sunday but i felt good and really proud of my self and that lifted my mood too.
Keep up the good work .. even WHEN you start to feel better.. Make it part of your daily routine doing coping skills xx

That's part of my problem I haven't found too many coping skills. I did start therapy but can only get in every 2 weeks. I think if I can find the right meds again and have more courage to work through my fears. Like driving more than 10 mins from my home without someone I just can't. Have had a few bad attacks driving alone and almost killed Myseld going 100 mph

Check out our Resources for great material/coping skills!
The library as well...I checked out virtually every book on anxiety I could find...
...and took from them what I found applicable/helpful to me, virtually creating my own self help program! ;)
Purchasing some CBT workbooks is also a good idea. There are many good choices on Amazon.
There is a lot you can do on your own in between appointments...you just have to get busy and put in the time and effort. It is worth it though. ;)

I agree...some days are just so challenging you might need to put the self help work on hold...
...but go back to it when you are feeling stronger.
Good on you for doing all you have so far...
...it will all 'click' with time...this was my experience.
I had worked and worked forever it seemed, and I was getting discouraged...and then pretty suddenly at one point, it all just kicked in!
Keep up hope, and continue to update is, so we can cheer you on. :)
