Switch from Lexapro to Zoloft--How long until I know Zoloft is working or not?

I've heard that it can take up to two months or so to feel the full therapeutic effects of any given SSRI antidepressant. For me, when I first started taking Lexapro I felt the effects extremely quickly and felt "cured" and completely symptom-free for about a year before slowly going downhill over the next 10 or so years. Lexapro has stopped working almost completely and so I made the switch, under the advice of my psychatrist, to Zoloft.

My question is: when switching from one SSRI to another, does it still take several weeks to tell whether or not the medication is working? I took 25mg Zoloft for a week, then 50mg for a week, and now I've been on 100mg for a couple days.

What I have read this is one of those drugs that can work quick
or take time, but some people swear by it, just give the med a
fair trial and good luck to you! Peace

Hopefully since you are going from one med to another in the same classification, you should have a smooth switch.

I am cheering you on in your change, and hope that this is just what you need to start feeling better again!

Glad to find someone else asked this same thing. I'm on day 5 of 25 mg Zoloft after 10 years of 10mg Lexapro (with some increases/decreases over the years). So far, things have been rough. Yesterday and today I've felt super anxious and have had lots of stomach aches, nausea, fatigue. Had to take the day off of work today it got so bad. I knew it wasn't going to be easy, but I'm already doubting the change of meds- I was still experiencing lots of anxiety while on the lexapro, so my dr. thought it may have stopped making a difference. I know it will be worth it in the long run, but I'm having a hard time reminding myself of that right now. In 3 days I'll up to 50mg of Zoloft, maybe that will ease some of these symptoms. Just can't wait to feel better!

Hi Golden.

Welcome to the forum.

Changing medication can be a difficult time and it seems to be the norm for things to get worse before they get better again and this period last anywhere between 2-4 weeks after start up. Stick with it if you can and double up on your coping skills to help with the extra anxiety we have some good links in our resources section.

I'm starting my 3rd bottle of zoloft been 60 days and I can finally say I'm feeling good. Last time I took it last year took me 90 days to feel good.

It's going to take you a few weeks before you start feeling the effects of the Zoloft.
