I am looking for something that I might add to my SSRI (or use on a stand alone basis if I decide to taper off the SSRI). Has anyone here used Vistaril, and if so did you find it helpful? A little bit of "sedation" might be good for me, to take the anxiety edge off, since I always feel like I am on a state of high alert. On the other hand, I cannot be sedated during the day, since I have to work.

Vistaril/hydroxyzine (prescription antihistamine taken off label for anxiety) can be a great alternative to a benzodiazepine. It is taken PRN for times of acute anxiety/panic just like a benzo, but does not carry the risk of dependency.

The downside is that the efficacy may not quite match that of a benzodiazepine, and some have reported that the sedation effect was too strong for functioning well during the day...

...but everyone has a different experience and needs, so I absolutely think it is worth trying! It could be just what you need for your management regimen!

Let us know what you decide and how it goes if you do give this Rx a try!

I wonder if it is any more affective than doxylamine, which is available over the counter. I have taken that a number of times and it is helpful for sleep, although if I take more than a half a pill I have a hangover effect the next day.

I was just prescribed buspar for anxiety, to add to my lexapro. I will give it a try and see how it goes. That might be an alternative for you.

I will be interested to hear how the BuSpar works for you. I did ask my doctor about that. He said in his experience it is safe and does not have bad side effects, but often does not work very well. However, each person’s experience is different so it might work for you. Let us know

I think I might not take the Vistaril. I’ve read some reviews suggesting people felt very groggy the next day and that for some people it actually made them more agitated rather than less. If I try it, it better be on a day I do not have to go to work the next day!

vestiril was too sedating for daytime use for me. buspar great for me. can take daytime. your mileage may vary

I only take Vistaril at night but it does have a calming effect. I think it depends on how much you take as well. 25mg does it for me.

Do you take the Vistaril mostly as a sleep aid, or does it also help calm your anxiety during the following day?

it does have a slight calming next day but wears off by afternoon

I took 50mg last night and so far today it does seem to be helping keep my anxiety in check. I'm hoping it last for awhile longer. I've been having a hard time lately so I upped it in hopes to sleep better, which I think I did.
