This is probably the main reason why A/p is so prevalent today.
I prefer to see A/P as an indication or warning sign that something is fundamentally wrong with the person's life or lifestyle. Essentially their thought patterns.
The main problem as I see it is that most people will eventually, privately, accept that they have A/P but stop short of finding out why.
It is not something to be ashamed of, and the sooner the world accepts this the better the world will be.
A/P sufferers actually have an advantage in that they know there is a problem, although few go on to find out what it is. Most just accept it as the illness and not the symptom.
IMO A/P is self induced although it is certainly not deliberate or wanted. But over the years it has been oversimplified through ignorance by observers(including some in the medical profession) who believe it is both a deliberate and faked illness.
Comments like ' pull youself together' and 'stop being silly'(thanks dad) certainly don't help.
People with A/P have been blessed with an internal warning system that something is not all that it should be, giving them an advantage over the rest of the population.
Accept it and be proud of it, but follow up by understanding it, and you will come out the other side a much better, stronger person.
