HI Barbz,
Keep in mind that an SSRI does not work the same for everyone. My doc tried zoloft first and it did nothing for me.
Paxil has been a godsend for me. Went on it 10 years ago at 30 (might have been 40 mg for a few months). I had severe A/P along with postpartum depression. It took about
4 weeks to fully kick in but had some relief after about
2 weeks. about
5 yrs ago wanted to see if I could wean off. Did it real slow - wound up at 10 mg and have been there since.
At the full dose I had no A/P symptoms. But I had also been to therapy after my first panic attacks 12 years ago and learned CBT and relaxation, which was invaluable. At that time I did not need any meds after xanax for the first few weeks.
I very highly recommend therapy. It helped me make some changes (through CBT) and learn coping mechanisms. Without those I dont know if I would have been able to get down to a min dose of paxil.
If you let us know more (how long you're on it, what dose, etc.) we may be able to provide more guidance.

Paxil works well for me. I am on 40mg. once a day. Don't quit without telling your doctor though!

I did great on Paxil for both anxiety and depression many years ago. I ended up on 50mg, but it worked very well. Unfortunately, I also gained 40lbs. on it, so I had to switch to Zoloft. That was 8 years ago and it's still works for me.
Everyone is different and each SSRI is different. If one doesn't work or causes intolerable side effects, you can try another and it may do the job beautifully. Most people respond within 2 weeks and see additional improvement over 8-10 weeks, so it's important to be patient and give it enough time to help.
Let us know how you do!
