Hi,
First, I want to say that I do not think that you are schizophrenic Worrier.
I do want to clear up a little of the misconceptions that I'm seeing regarding schizophrenia though. It is not true that you have to hear voices or music or noises in order to be schizophrenic. Hearing things and/or seeing things are just one of the symptoms of schizophrenia - hallucinations. Many people with schizophrenia are simply delusional. This does not mean that they have to have hallucinations, although they might, it just means that their perception of reality is altered. For example, they may see a person crossing the street towards you, getting in their car after you, and following you to the light. This actually happened - their was no hallucination. However, a schizophrenic may feel that this person is following them or something similar. Again, there was no hallucination, just an altered perception of reality.
There are also some schizophrenics that are neither delusional or hallucinatory. They may be introverted, incoherent, or in a catatonic like state - perhaps simply withdrawn and showing little emotion. These cases are much harder to diagnose...yeah, kind of obvious I know.
It is also not true that a schizophrenic cannot see the symptoms in themselves. My father is a schizophrenic. He identified the symptoms in himself and sought care. He is a college graduate with a degree in mathematics and a highly successful career. He suffered from delusions all the time and a few hallucinations, yet was still able to recognize that it was not reality. Most people with delusions or hallucinations aren't as lucky though.
There are many informative websites on schizophrenia out there and I really don't see that much of a problem with educating yourself regarding mental conditions, particularly if you suffer from one already. I suffer from panic attacks, anxiety, depression, and OCD - all diagnosed. I've often wondered if I am schizophrenic myself, but through education I've pretty much convinced myself that I'm not. If you're up to it, go through some medical journals, they often contain very interesting facts - although there are so many conflicting facts that it can be difficult to discern the truth.
One other fact regarding schizophrenia is that there appears to be a genetic factor involved, according to wikipedia as high as 80%, but I didn't check where they got that source from.
Well, I didn't plan on this as an introduction to the anxiety forums, but there ya have it.
For clarity, I am not a doctor, nurse, or member of any other medical field. I'm a mathematician like my Dad
and hopefully not schizophrenic.
PS - I went through the same thing as you worrier. I was convinced I was schizophrenic. Heck, I still think I am on occasion, but at least I know what to look for now.
