O.K. guys, as I sit here and make this list for my doctor, I am coming to a thought of not knowing something.  I have been taking Xanax pretty regularly for about a week.  I do not have a prescriiption to it, I am getting it from someone...(a patient of his, but I am not going to confess to that.)  At any rate, I am sure I need to tell him I have been using the Xanax, right?  How do I go about that?  What if he asks where I have been getting it from?  And this may be a real dumb question, but can he turn me in for illegal use of it, and force me to tell where it is coming from?  I just know sharing Xanax is illegal, but I feel the doctor needs to  know I have been using it for a bit over a week, ya know?

I am coming along nicely on my list for him.  This just has me stopped until I get some answers from my good friends here at healingwell!!!

Dear Tammy,
I think it is best to just tell the Dr. the truth and he will not be turning you in to the police. It is not good to take someone elses med as it is a prescription drug and you should have your own or maybe your Dr. will decide on a different med.

He is there to help you and I am sure you are not the first person he has ever had that tried someone elses med for the purpose it was intended, in your case Xanax for anxiety.

So keep on making your list and do not let this issue cause you great concern. I have a feeling he will understand your desperation.

You also have the physician/patient confidentiality relationship.

No more to worry about on that question, OK

Thanks Kitt! And yes, I know it isn't good to take other peoples meds. but I have been prescribed Xanax before, and I knew it wasn't going to hurt me or anything. Plus, I used the smallest possible dosage. I know it is wrong!!! But, I was so desperate for some relief!!!

I suggest you find a doc who will prescribe any valium type med for you, doesnt have to be xanax as they a re all much the same

darn it, they are not all the same, Harry. Where do you get this stuff? They all do the same thing but they are all different.

OK, I have no problem getting the Xanax, or any type of med from my doctor. My only question was if I should tell my dr. that I have been taking Xanax that I have borrowed from someone. The fact of the matter is, I was totally honest with my Dr.
Harry, you seem to suggest Valium type meds in all your answers. Seems like that is the only answer you give. Just wondering why????

Tammy~ having just got thru med law and bio-ethics I can assure you he CAN NOT turn you into the police. Its doctor/pt confindentiality and its against the law, he can actually lose his license. The only thing they are required by law to report is physical abuse or STDs. So tell him you're taking it. He may just go ahead and give you your own script. Im not going to tell you its so dangerous to take someone elses scripts, i mean thats never a good idea, but you obviously know you dont have bad reactions to xanax so no big deal. ( i know thats prolly not the right thing to say but its the truth) In any case, to answer your question, he may not be thrilled you have been taking someone elses meds but you dont have to tell him where you get it from and you cant get in legal trouble for it.
