Hi everyone.  Before taking Cymbalta, I lost 47 lbs.  Since starting Cymbalta, I have put some weight back on.  I am very concerned about this.  My cholesterol is finally where it needs to be.  Everything runs in my family from heart disease to diabeties.  I watched them go through hell from this and I don't want the same for myself.

I went to my doc the other day and explained what is going on.  I asked him to decrease my med. from 60 mg once a day to 30 mg so I can loose the rest of the weight.  I know medication is only part of overcoming A/P.  I bought a book on A/P that I'am beginning to read.  Don't get me wrong, Cymbalta has helped me and I want to continue it but I am giving this a try.

sorry but IMO your med causes no weight gain or loss

find out the usual dose range from doc or a pharmacist, it wont work if you take less than the minimum

I take Cymbalta at 120mg and I cannot say that it has caused me to gain a lot of weight, maybe 10 lbs. but I know that is because I eat the wrong things.

The verdict seems split on this issue but it is not known for huge weight gains from what I have read on other sites that discuss meds.

I can certainly understand how you feel, loosing the large amount of wieght you have, you don't want to gain it back.

Discuss this with your physician and I hope you are able to come to a conclusion. Bless you.

We shouldn't be surprised when our appetites are effected by the SSRI/SNRI class of drugs. Afterall, by design they impact our brain chemistry! Some people lose weight, some people gain. I vote for mental health first, and use your better state of mind to make good decisions about dealing with the weight gain/loss . : )

Thanks for your responses.

I started 30 mg Saturday night.  So far I'm not feeling too bad.  If I need to go back to 60 mg then I will.  But I wanna give this a chance!

The other Mary (Kitt) would like to start decreasing the Cymbalta but I am waiting until August when I see my pdoc.
Please keep us posted on how you are doing? I have a special interest in your decrease.

More incorrect information, Harry. I hate to call you out because you do contribute a great deal to the forum, but please research things a little before you answer.
The PDR states: "Side effects may include: Appetite changes, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, dry mouth, fatigue, headache, insomnia, nausea, sexual difficulties, sleepiness, sweating, tremor, urinary difficulties, vomiting, weakness"
More frequent side effects are listed first in the PDR.

Many many MEDS do cause weight gain or weight loss
for me VALIUM make me eat or I can go for days w/o anything and have gone to 88 lbs /tube fed
So yes I do agree that meds are different for everyone BUT they can and do cause weight differences
** a good ex: is Prednisone.....**
THis is one of the reasons I do not take ssri's as I have a prob with thinking I am BIG.......no I am not anorexic BUT.....

I did a lot of research on Cymbalta. 

I talked with my doctor, surfed the internet, went to Cymbalta's website, among other things.

I weighed the pros and cons and gave this a lot of thought!

It's been a little over a week since my Cymbalta was decreased.

Overall I feel good.  The first few days I had some tightness in my chest and felt a little jittery but I expected that from the decrease in the medicine.   I am reading a book about A/P and continue to do breathing exercises that help keep me calm.

Also, my eating habits seem to be like my old self.  I don't have the feeling of wanting to eat all the time and the cravings have diminished.

Good Morning. You are the pioneer here as you know I want to cut back on the Cymbalta starting in August. I am weaning the Valium yet but the 2 may cross over as I don't think I can come off the Valium completely by August. So you will be the first to walk on the moon and I hope I can drop the dose down too then we can wear moon boots together

You are an inspiration as well. I often think about stories I read here and they help me through difficult times. I especially remember when you had jury duty and the way you handled it. It gave me hope! Thank You!
