Lamictal for anxiety!

Hey guys. I'm Ashley and I'm 16 years old. I went to a psychiatrist for the first time today. We talked a bit and she confirmed I do have social anxiety. My mom talked to her and she prescribed me Lamictal because she thinks I MAY have a mood disorder so she didn't want to put me on an anti-depressant. She said it does help with anxiety. So I'm wondering if Lamictal will actually help with my social anxiety or what. I'm kind of worried it won't help. confused

It appears that Lamictal has significantly more antidepressant potency than other mood disorder medications so I think if your physician has chosen this med for you it may surprise you and be a good drug. (Reference: PDR) 

I hope you obtain good results from Lamictal and stay with us, keep posting and know we are here to support you.

Welcome to HW :-)

I am bipolar, so I know a lot about these meds.  Lamictal is a mood stabilizer, it does have antidepressant properties, but is used as a mood stabilizer.  It is different from an actual antidepressant medication.  If your doc suspects you do have a mood disorder, she will stay away from giving you antidepressant meds because they have a high risk of making your condition worse.  I have never heard it used for anxiety, but who knows?  It didn't help my anxiety or panic attacks when I took it...Hopefully it helps you though.

hey ashley, lamictal will help. give it some a week or 2 which i see u already have. its a good drug, it helps mostly with depression but research has recently confirmed that it also helps with anxiety. i am on lamictal and klonipin. well, becuz if im not, my anxiety is so out of control i cannot function properly. half the time i cant figure out why im anxious...its a disorder, its real. stay on top of everything. my shrink diagnosed me as mood disorder, nos. not otherwise specified, becuz i have severe episodes of anxiety/depression...ups and downs. this has been the only drug that worked well for me besides for paxil. paxil KICKED DEPRESSION AND ANXIETYS BUTT COMPLETELY BUT SOME PEOPLE CANT HANDLE THE SIDE EFFECTS. I WAS ON IT FOR 6 MONTHS, AND IT CAUSED SOME PERSONAL FEMALE PROBLEMS WHICH I DONT THINK U WOULD BE WORRIED about CUZ YOUR STILL SO YOUNG. IF LAMICTAL FOR SOME REASON DOESNT KICK IT ALL AWAY, I WOULD ASK DOC FOR 10MG, THE 15, THEN 20-30MG OF PAXIL. EVERYONE I KNOW THAT TAKES IT LOVES IT. ITS JUST THE SEXUAL COMPLAINTS THAT MOST HAVE.
