Hello all,

I'm new to this board. I have anxiety/panic disorder, PTSD, and OCD.  I saw a post here where people were posting their favorite songs.  I am a music lover and music calms me or lifts my spirits when I need it. 

Does anyone here have any songs they can suggest that helps them during their worst (or best) times? I would really appreciate it.  I put CD's together and make DVD's as hobbies - I'm always looking for great music.  If this is not allowed on this board, please let me know.

Any Enya is good for me to calm me down.  Such as "wild child" or "autumn" or "orinoco flow".  Let me think here... OH... "waterfall", "Storms in Africa"

Other songs that come me down are "Jammin" "One Love" and "Is this love" by Bob Marley.

I can't think of anymore offhand so I'll add on more later.

Angel by Sarah McLachlan (or however you spell that). New Age music is very soothing and relaxing. Loreena McKennit is really good. It helped my grandmother with her depression if only for a little while. Also, you might want to look into playing some classical music. I know Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata is a great one for me. It relaxes me enough to where I can actually sleep.
-I agree with Twiggygal, Enya is a very good choice. I listen to her frequently.

I love Enya too - have several CD's which are very relaxing. I also like "Everybody hurts" when I feel very low... When I feel good and feel like a fighter, there is nothing like the "Rocky" soundtrack or "Fighter" by Christina Aguilera.  Also, when I'm blue, I pull out my kids' "Spirit" soundtrack. There is a song on that CD by Bryan Adams about being down and out, but then realizing we have the power to overcome. It is a wonderful movie and soundtrack - very uplifting!

Check out Neko Case's solo record "Fox Confessor Brings the Flood". There's some really haunting music on there. For some reason it seems very real to me, and when listening it seems to help me keep things in perspective. www.nekocase.com

Also, if you like that, check out Mazzy Star. It's a totally different kind of music, but haunting in a different way. I like dry but reverb drenched recordings. Very calming.

Nice thread! I was going to start something similar but then I saw this.

I don't know about the loveydovey and supportive songs; they seem to overdramatize the situation and most don't work for me. I prefer upbeat songs that get me fired up until I crash which is much more fun. :D

Incubus is probably my favorite band, you should check them out. Listening to them as I developed PD actually freaked me out a little, as some of the songs look like they are designed for/about panic disorder (see "Agoraphobia", "When It Comes", especially "Just a Phase" and more... ) I'm sure there's at least one song by them that you'd like. Red Hot Chili Peppers is also very deep in good stuff so I won't mention any specific song from them.

Other cool songs I like:
Danger Zone - Kenny Loggins
What is Love - Haddaway (obviously one of the best songs ever)
Push It to the Limit
Fast and Danger - Ill Mitch
Even Rats - The Slip (wooo guitar hero)
Teardrop - Massive Attack (theme from House)
I Wear My Sunglasses at Night - Corey Hart

and that should do it for now.

While I'm at it, I'd like to bring up a psychological kind of question. Do you guys listen to the same music all the time? i.e., say you have an ipod or mp3 player; do you listen to different music during different situations or do you just push play and go? It could be bad to listen to the same stuff when you're working out as what you were listening to while in pain, if you subconsciously associated the music to pain and thoughtlines of anxiety.

I don't know how many will know this song, it's from the early 90's, but one day I was going quite a distance to make a clothing exchange with just my daughter who was about 2 at the time with me.  I was extremely anxious, and wondering how I was going to make it to the store and back home again...I was about 45 minutes from home.  This song came on the radio and just made me feel better, it's been kind of my 'panic song' since then and I finally bought it for my i-pod.  It's called Hold On, by Wilson Phillips.  I know the song is more about the pain of losing someone you love, but the lyrics just speak to me as far as my panic is concerned. (I know that there is pain, but you hold on for one more day and you break free from the chains.)  We all know that sometimes all we can do is hold on for one more day.

Another one I like is Never Surrender, by Corey Hart and of course anything by Barry Manilow, who I have loved since I was 8 years old!  I love alot of country music too.

Mazzy Star: Debaser hit the nail on the head, She Hangs Brightly and So Tonight That I Might see are great albums.

Audioslave: All three of their albums are great. Chris Cornell is great.

Soundgarden: Superunknown is a great album. Again Chris Cornell can sing well.

A Perfect Circle: One of my favorite bands. Mer de Noms is great. Maynard's lyrics are great and the music is extremely soothing to me. Orestes and 3 Libras are a couple of great songs off of this album but the whole thing is great. I usually don't describe songs as beautiful but these two are just that.

REM: Automatic for the People. Find the River, Nightswimming, and Sweetness follows are a couple of my favorite songs. Reveal is also a good album.

Frank Sinatra: In the Wee Small Hours. A great album

John Lee Hooker: Don't Look Back. Great Blues. He was one of the best.

Buddy Guy: Feels Like Rain. Ive seen him 5 times. It doesnt get much better than Buddy.

BB King: There Is Always One More Time and Blues on the Bayou. He is the King.

That was great and very upbeat. When I am down and need to let it all out I turn to Faith Hill and the lyrics to her songs help me cry.  Her voice is spectacular and my Favorite is Song is Cry.

I forget where I saw this post (I think one of the moderators posted it) but the song "You Are Loved (Don't Give Up)" by Josh Groban was listed in the post. I downloaded the song, and I LOVE IT...It makes me cry!! sad   (in a good way). I want to thank whoever posted that song. It is great!
