I usually take Klonopin .5mg at night to help me sleep. It's mainly for the muscle twitches from fibro, but it also stops that horrible "jerk" that I get sometimes when drifting off. The doc said that's the anxiety, the *loss of control* while going to sleep, so my brain gives my body a "kick" and I jerk awake. Really, really annoying. I've tried speaking to my brain, but it just won't stop doing it..LOL.
Anyway, as usual, I have run out of the Klono. My copays for doc visits have gotten astronomical lately, and I just have not had it. So... my pharmacist told me once that he suggested Benadryl over the script for Ambien that I had at the time.. so I figured it would help me out last night, since I was out of Klono. I take such a low dosage that I don't ever seem to get withdrawal when I run out.
It worked.. knocked me for a loop after it kicked in and I had real trouble keeping eyes open on the show I was watching. As I was falling asleep, I would have this cold numbness start at my head and flash through my body. Not quite a "jerk" thing, but disconcerting. I figured it was just the anxiety manifesting itself differently and breaking through the "Benadryl coma" my brain was in.
Anyone ever used Benadryl as a sub for anti anxiety meds? I had one nurse tell me this a long time ago when I was deathly afraid of taking a Benzo. Then the pharmacist tells me Benadryl can be used as a sleep aid. It IS very sedating for me, any antihistimine is... I absolutely can not drive on anything like it.
