ANXIETY/AGOROPHOBIA/IBS XANAX VS KLONOPIN

Hi there. I am (not practicing anymore) an RN and if these people gave you a prescription for Klonopin to start and knew you used to take Xanax, I would just start the Klonopin.

I was myself just switched to Klonopin from Ativan. The good thing about Klonopin versus the short acting benzos like Xanax/Ativan is that they are more level. You will not have withdrawal if you can go 3 days without Xanax. Even though you have been on it for a year or so, the last dose you took is already out of your system and you can take the Klonopin without worry.

When you take Xanax, it works quickly, but also quickly wears off. Think of Klonopin as a smooth, stable agent that doesn't peak/fall and controls your anxiety better. It has worked much better for me so far, even though I didn't think it would.

Hi this is Kitt.  I was on Ativan for almost a year and before that I was on Traxene for over 20 years for my anxiety.  My Pdoc felt I had been on a benzos for so long that I should wean off.  We chose a longer acting medication, Valium,  to maintain a steadier level of the drug in my system. It will give you better coverage and a lot less side effect than taking short acting benzos.  As the short acting drugs wear off you coverage is gone and you may start to feel anxious all over again.

IMO you can switch from Xanax to Klonopin but you should take it on a regular schedule and not skip any doses.  You don't want to take both drugs together and you used the Xanax so sporadically you should not notice any withdrawal. 

You should have an insert from the drug company with your Klonopin that will give you all the information on Klonopin. What are the dosing directions on your pill bottle for when to take the Klonopin?

It is normal to feel nervous over the meds as we hear so much about the meds both good and bad.  Remember everyone is different and each story is indivdual and uniquie to the person sharing.

I think trying the drug for you is a good choice.
