Lump in Throat

Hi All,

I am expierence a lump feeling in my throat. I first started having it about 2-3 years ago around Xmas time, went to the doctor and he said it was due to nasal drip, so he gave me nasonex. It seemed to work. Then I noticed the lump seemed to get worse around real Xmas tress and I confirmed that this last xmas while at my brothers house, sure enough I was around the tree for about 3-4 hours and the next day I had the lump.

Okay I thought that was it..Now I have the lump again yet I have not been around any xmas tress. I thought it was due to some food I ate. I do have hiccups with it to sometimes and feel like I cannot burp. It is stressing my out. I am going through a divorce and financial issues too. I wonder if that could be it.

My anxiety started out with a lump in a my throat, or more precisely, a sense that it was closing on me. While it is true that this feeling - it's called a globus sensation - is a symptom of anxiety, it is also a symptom of some physical conditions as well. I have just recently found out that mine wasn't due only to anxiety, no matter that dozens of ER visits and trips to my doctor indicated nothing else. It was only a second opinion from an ENT (ear-nose-throat) doctor that finally explained to me why it was happening: acid reflux in my case.

I STRONGLY encourage anyone with this sensation to get checked out by an ENT doctor (not a gastric doctor - they won't look at your throat, only your esophagus). Had I known what was happening three years ago, I think my anxiety would not have taken the route it did.

I am going to make an appoint with both my PCP and ENT doctor. This thing keeps coming and going like every few months itstime to get it resolved.

LumpBob,   Welcome to the Healing Well family; this is a great community with members who are caring, supportive and helpful in so many ways.  They are a great source of information and every day I learn something new.  Be sure to read some old posts to gain some insight as there is a wealth of information in them.  Also, there is a list of resources to the right - just click on the Anxiety-Panic link in the yellow box and it will take you to the resources.  Again, there is a wealth of information for you.   I also have acid reflux and it caused the very symptoms you describe.  The way it was found for me ws because I thought I was having a heart attack and ended up in the hospital for 3 days because I was also having some sort arrythmia (sp) and pvc's (whatever that is - LOL).  After many, many tests it was determined my heart was fine so someone suggested acid reflux and I then had an endoscopy done.  Lo and behold, it was acid reflux.  So now that I have an answer, I feel better about it and take medication to keep it under control.  I'm glad to know that you will be seeing your docs as it's important to rule out/in any possible medical conditions before anxiety is diagnosed.  Please keep posting and let us know how you make out with the doctors.   Take care, Wen
