Hi all:

I haven't been on in a while because I was doing great with Celexa - that is, until perimenopausal symptoms have caused extreme anxiety during ovulation and just after my period.  I saw my nurse practitioner this a.m. and she is switching me from Celexa to Effexor and Buspar.  Anyone else using one of these cocktails?  Any side effects?  My secretary takes Effexor with no problems. I already have a weight problem, so I don't need that side effect.  I'm scared to make the switch, but equally afraid not to.  rolleyes

Hello, so good to see you posting but sorry about the anxiety.  My Pdoc added Buspar to my meds and I feel it does a good job.  I am weaning off of Cymbalta.  I would love to be free of all the bottles but I have had 2 physicians tell me that I will not do well with out the meds.

I know what it feels like to go through weeks and weeks of anxiety and depression.

i was on effexor on and off for about 2 years, i recently went off it and switched to pristiq(by the same makers of effexor) i went off effexor because i thought it was making my throat feel funny, now im reading one of the posts in this forum about how other people feel that same lump in the throat and now im begining to think that that is what it was! maybe i shouldnt have switched. oh well i like pristiq. the only thing i dont like about both of the meds is extreme constipation. this does not happen for everyone however. but if you already have problems going, i would talk to your dr about this.

Thanks for the responses. I took my first dose of Effexor and Buspar this a.m. I don't know if it's wishful thinking, but I actually feel better today already! Did anyone have weight gain or loss with either of these drugs? I could use the weight loss part! I have struggled to lose weight ever since I started taking antidepressants.

My friend of 14 yrs is on Effexor and she is not gaining weight at all
I know she has lupus but I am not sure if the plaquenil she needs daily holds her weight
at a steady 120 or not but like I said she hasnt gained any at all

I was on Celexa for the last three years and expected my doctor to just give me Xanax or valium as needed, but, instead they made the medication switch to Effexor and Buspar. We'll see - he still might prescribe Xanax as needed. Thanks for the help everyone!

Just wanted to update you on my situation.  I've been on effexor and buspar for the past two weeks with no side effects.  I hesitate to say it, but I'm feeling really good!  I'm sleeping better than ever and no more brain zaps.  (I had those the whole time I was on Celexa, Zoloft and other antidepressants).  The true test will be when my cycle rolls around again, since that seemed to be my worst time.  I'll keep you posted.  Thanks for all the support - this forum is a God-send! yeah

I took Buspar but it didn't touch my anxiety. (Everyone is different, it could very well help you alot).  It didn't make me hungrier though.  I took it with Lexapro.  No longer take Buspar.

 I take buspar it makes me lightheaded for a bit but then it goes away . I now will eat about 15 minutes before i take and break buspar into smaller doses this helps alleviate the lightheaded feeling . Other than that it seems to have brought my anxiety level down to a more controllable level.

I'm so glad your new meds are working so well!

I went through a period a few years back, when Paxil first went generic, and suddenly, it stopped working for me. What a nerve-wracking situation, so I identify with your unwilling need to change. I hope you won't have to deal with any difficult side effects, and that the switch continues to go smoothly.

Can you tell me the doses of each that you take? I have gotten off of celexa (sweating and insomnia) and the effexor is ok but my incentive and initiative have not returned as yet. Im doing more but still not as much as I could. I called my pcp and am waiting for her return call but was curious and ENCOURAGED when reading about the buspar which I had used with prozac and now the effexor. thank you so much for your time and soooooo glad to hear you are feeling better!!!

I do want to see you get an answer to your question, but since you have posted onto an older thread...many of these members are not here anymore.

Buspar has saved my sanity. It's worked wonders for me. I take 30 mg 2x/day.

No, I take my Buspar with Pristiq but I will always recommend the Buspar to anyone. It saved me.

I take both Buspar and Effexor and find they work well together. I cannot say the Buspar saved me but I do feel it helps with the anxiety to a point.

May I ask what doseages you take and do you take them together? My pcp once said, treat the buspar like a xanax and take it when you feel u r struggling more so than regularly??
