QUESTION ABOUT LEXAPRO AND ALCOHOL

Ok I'm not currently taking lexapro yet

but im in college and me and my friends drink pretty much every wknd...

but i was wondering.. do you think that i can take lexapro every day...

but stop taking it on the days that i know ill be drinking??

 

im afraid to drink on lexapro while drinking so i thought maybe if i stopped taking it the day i would drink maybe it would be okay...

Hi there! It is not recommended to mix Lexapro with any alcoholic drinks even though this drug doesn’t interact with alcohol. I would also suggest not having any alcohol if possible. Maybe you could have some non alcoholic cocktails! I hope you will decide to go and have fun!

Just my 2 cents.  Do not try the plan you have mentioned as you do not want to confuse your body's blood concentration  of the amount of Lexapro you have onboard.

I'm afraid it is *not* a good idea to mix your meds and alcohol. The medication remains in your system for a bit, depending on its half-life, so even if you don't take it one day yet drink on that day, the substances can interact. (Some drugs linger even longer than a day - staying in your body long after being taken is the whole point of the controlled release ones.)

Is there a way you can enjoy the time with your friends without compromising your meds? When I've had times of needing to avoid alcohol, I'd make or bring special drinks or treats for myself, things that I wouldn't ordinarily have. That still allowed me to join in the celebratory spirit, but not worry about weakening the effects of the meds that were so helpful to me. And you certainly don't have to tell your friends why; if they ask, just say, "I'm taking some medication right now that I'd rather not mix with alcohol" and leave it at that.

Hi i agree, you should just avoid alcohol while you are medicated. and if you want the lexapro to do its job the best, then give it a chance to do that without alcohol in your system.

When i was on lexapro for a short time i saw no side effects when drinking except for it would feel like i drank twice as much as i actually did, but everybody is different. But keep in mind it will interfere with how effective your medicine is so if you can stay away from heavy drinking do so, do not stop taking your meds because of drinking

Hi skylersmommy,

I wouldn't advocate mixing meds with alcohol but if you do, then do it in moderation always. I wouldn't stop taking lexapro if your doc has prescribed you to take it every day..it will mess things up!! Your system will get confuddled! Moderation is key in everything.

Hi

Up until about 7 weeks ago i was drinking whilst taking AD & Benzo medication and used to feel awful the next day, all my friends drink every weekend and i find it very hard not to at the moment as i used to drink to stop me from feeling so anxious. I think the drinking did make my symptoms worse and my doctor recommended that i stop drinking whilst taking these meds.

I agree with the others and would say to try your best to avoid drink whilst you are taking medication.

Hi there.  I went on Lexapro 10mg for OCD/Depression about 6 months ago.  I drink socially and very ocassionally.  I have never had any problems with nor have I had any horrible hangovers.  I usually only have 2-3 drinks tops when I do drink, so I'm not sure how much you consume. 

I asked my PCP and a PhD who diagnosed me and they both said that you shouldn't overdo it but you can drink socially on this medication.  Just be cautious and take heed.  Good luck.
