I have been dealing with the racing heart/heart pounding/palpitations/flutters for a few years now. Went to my pdoc and to a cardiologist and even a few ER trips for tachycardia. Have had all the testing from EKGs to cardiac ultrasounds and everything normal. It wasn't until I saw a therapist and talked to her that I started learning how to move past this symptom. She said anxiety causes rushes of adrenaline and that is what causes the physical symptom of racing heart, etc. She suggested more exercise to burn off the extra adrenaline and forcing myself to NOT focus on it. I know it's hard to do that when you are sitting still and all you can feel is your pounding heart and I still have trouble not focusing on it. But, I have found that when my mind is otherwise occupied it seems like the symptom disappears (it is still there I just don't notice it). Like I notice it as soon as I wake up in the morning but once I get busy I don't notice again until I am home from work and sitting around. Or when I am out to dinner with family I don't notice it cause I am focused on something else. It is part of my CBT to FORCE myself to stay occupied and at times it seems almost overwhelming but it does work. I don't know about
others, but with a lot of practice and reminders to myself constantly, this is what is working for me.
