NO weight gain anti-depressants

Anyone know of any? I've tried paxil, zoloft, lexapro, prozack, lamictal, and they all made me gain 40 lbs. I'm at 119 now and I feel great! Except mentally...anxiety, panic attacks...probably some depression.
I'm currently on 3mg ativan per day as needed and my doc said I would need an anti-depressant.

Hi

Citalopram (Celexa) is one antidepressant which you do not put weight on. I think a lot of the other types do list that they can cause weight gain or weight loss hope this is of help.

I'll ask my Dr. about Celexa then...does it also help with anxiety/panic disorder?

Wellbutrin is one that is not known for weight gain but hard to get on and off of.  I tried it and could not get past side effects............I was in a fog and walking into walls, literally.

i've tried a number of meds but sometimes they act differently on different people...

here's what i've found:

so many of them do make you gain weight (for me effexor and lexapro). the first six months i gained weight but i did feel better and eventually i was able to lose the weight, so its not like i continually gained weight the entire time i was on the meds.

prob not the answer you were looking for lol. but i am always trying to ask my dr. the same thing, but i guess the meds work differently on different people.

i have heard also that wellbutrin has little risk of weight gain but it is suppose to have some other side effects.

Yes Celexa is supposed to be a good med to treat anxiety and depression but check with your doctor.

As mentioned above, Wellbutrin is not known to add weight; in fact, may help control appetite.  It works on a different brain chemical than the SSRIs.  I do not have trouble going on or off Wellbutrin.  This is my second time on it. 

Zyprexa and Depakote definitely make me extremely hungry.  I am now off Depakote, thank goodness, as it was the real culprit.  I only have to take Zyprexa as an anxiety rescue medication so don't have to deal with daily hunger from it.

My son, friend, and I all gained 50 lbs on Paxil.  And the literanture says weight gain is not a major side effect!

I think it's so sad that we have to deal with anxiety AND weight issues as well.

if somebody can find me an AD that doesnt make me look like a whale, please dont hesitate! im on Zoloft, and the weight gain is ridiculous. i dont recognise myself. really.

I take Celexa not for depression but for anxiety. I have gained weight but I don't attribute my weight gain to Celexa but due to the fact I had completely stopped working out because I used to fear raising my heart rate. The Celexa seems to help me with my anxiety. The bad thing about Celexa that I have found is if I miss a dose I get a strange feeling in my head like it takes me a bit to "catch up". Once I get back on schedule I am back on track.

Celexa may be a drug to speak with your doctor about.

My doctor just prescribed Cymbalta and told me it was weight neutral. Not sure how true this is, as I just started taking it. I was on Lexapro and gained weight on it.

Gosh I sure hope Lexapro doesn't put much weight on, that would be the last thing I need, since I'm trying to lose weight.

I've been on Lexapro for about a year and a half and I've put on about 15lbs. Some of this was due to inactivity but the Lex made me tired and I had no desire to workout. I'm weaning off it slowing now and hoping to lose the weight.

 I had a nice little reminder of my weight gain today at the Endocrinologist for my thyroid checkup. When she weighed me she put the scale on the number I weighed the last time I saw her (1yr ago). Well, needless to say she had to move it on up!! I was SO embarrased blush

I also get embarrased by that too Dee. . . I stand there praying that they just quit moving the darned weight thing because it is always so off from what we have at home that it can be quite shocking at times :)

My Doctor swear the literature claims Cymbalta does not add weight......well I take it and I gained 25 lbs so now I want her to take it............ smhair .  I am weaning off this med and it is not easy going as the brain shivers and head feel funny as the dose drops.

I agree with Georgie Girl, a med that causes you to feel anxious about your body image feels like a detriment to the reason your using the med.

Oh great! I will have to discuss this with her when I see her next week. Though I felt so much better on Lexapro, I had horrible self esteem. So I guess the verdict is there is no such thing as a NO weight gain anti depressant?! GGRR!
