Anxiety from exercise?

God I love this site!!! I have a question though.... I have been very athletic for most of my life until about 8 years ago when arthritis stole my thunder. I stopped running, working out, hiking, and biking. I've dealt with panic attacks since I was 12 years old but have learned to cope with them. Although now, I am on Remicade for the arthritis and I CAN exercise again but I've noticed that I am vulnerable to panic attacks when I exercise and get winded. This is very frustrating for me. I'm afraid to push it because once I start getting out of breath it evolves right into a panic attack and the last thing I want to happen when my heart rate is up and I'm out of breath is to make everything worse by feeling panic and then really feeling like I can't get enough air and my heart rate goes nuts. Is this unusual for people with panic issues? I used to run until my legs gave out and now I'm unable to even get a decent cardio workout in because of this.

Hey Tony is the Remicade a fairly new med for you? I am wondering if that is causing you to feel breathless with increased activity? I too have Crohns (not on Remi), and have heard others say they get wierd side effects from it. Just a thought!!

Hello :)

My aunt is on Remicade also for RA and used to get winded at times during exercise. She has just taken it slowly and has built herself up to where she is stronger now and does not feel anxious anymore about doing things like exercise or using the push mower, etc. I know how hard it is to be very active and go downhill myself and was feeling super anxious when I started exercising again, but I take it one day at a time and have pushed myself a bit to where I am getting a good cardio workout now :) I hope the same goes for you soon and please let you doc know about this so maybe you could be put on a safe regime to get back to you.

I felt this way before the remicade. Actually I have more stamina now than before. I truly believe it's a mind thing for me. Being winded during exercise reminds me of the hyper-ventilation that occurs with a panic attack and then I'm soon in one. I just wondered if any other victims of panic attacks have experienced this. I am slowly working my way back up to a decent cardio workout but I can tell I'm holding back for fear of having one once I'm already worked up and out of breath. ANy other comments are welcome. I would say to continue to pace yourself and you will find that you will keep building the stamina that you want, it will just take you longer. I think it is great that you are physically active, keep up the good work.

Hey there,

This is Kitt.............do you wheeze at all when you feel short of breath?  The is an exercise induced asthma that will cause people to feel short of breath.  I have a friend that bikes and has for years an all of a sudden developed the exercised induced asthma............she now uses an inhaler prior to biking her 50 miles a day...............

I am lucky  to walk 50 steps a day.........lol.

No wheezing at all. This is simply a panic reaction to my heart rate going up and being winded from exercise. Simple as that.
