I am wondering if anyone else is scared to death about this swine flu.  I live in Ohio and they just came on T.V. and said another person has it here.  I want to keep my kids home from school.  I am really worried.  Is anyone else  having panic attacks over this.  Is it gonna turn into an epidemic.  I am almost ready to just stay at home and not go anywhere.  This is a nitemare for people with anxiety.

No, I'm not worried about it (yet). I don't think we need to panic right now. There have been such few cases with the Swine flu in the U.S. If you consider how many people actually populate this country, the flu hasn't gotten bad yet. Your fears can rub off on your children, so it's important they see you calm and staying in a healthy frame of mind.

On the news, they say to wash your hands often, cough into your arm, etc. The regular things we do when we have a cold/flu. I would think it's worse if you get the Swine flu and you're an infant or someone over 60. Stay calm and make sure your kids don't see you freaking out. Everything will be okay!

I would treat this flu like any other flu.  Wash your hands and cover your cough.  I would not book a flight to Mexico at this time but that is the recommendation of the government.

I would truly not panic.

There have been a few cases in my state also, but I think it's like dealing with other contagious illnesses. Try to be healthy in your daily habits, out in public, and trust that it will not follow the doom-and-gloom path that the media are making it out to be.

And do try to soothe your children's concerns over it. They are impressionable, and you're right to try your best not to let them become frightened through you.

I am also worried very very much about this. I live about 30 minutes away from Mexico's border. So we have a ton of illegals here. Which will not seek medical attention if they become ill. Instead they are more likely to spread this infection.
I do have 3 kids. And have thought about pulling them out of school. The Elem. school my son attends actually washes their hands often through out the day and uses hand sanitizer. Middle school nothing. High school nothing.

So to help my kids I have sent them to school with 2oz of hand sanitizer. They are to use it often. I made it scented in there favorite fragrance to encourage them to use it. And since I do my own stuff they feel special when I send them with my products.

Other then totally freaking out about this. Told hubby we will not be eating pork for some time either. Even though they say its not in the meat. Its still in my head that there is a chance.
I already don't leave the house. But will not be doing much. Have 2 baby showers I should go to but will be missing them also just in case.

<shudder> I don't want this... Living in New Mexico so close to the border is very scary. I'm surprised nothing has happened yet. And I am one of those that would rather react instead of wait and see.

Good Morning All,

From what I have been hearing through the news media, each state is receiving huge quanties of  anti-viral drugs such as Tamiflu. I know MN has over 400,000 doses of the medication set aside for any outbreak.

Just a bit of FYI:

What is swine flu?
It's a form of influenza that commonly affects pigs and, more rarely, humans.

Can I get it from eating pork?
No.

What are the symptoms?
They're similar to more common strains of influenza: fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing. Some people also report coming down with a runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

I live very close to the border myself, and I personally am not scared. I think personally that the media is blowing this out of proportion. Think of the number of actual cases vs the large population, and it really isn't that bad. I also believe with the all the news reports that even the illegal aliens would seek medical care. What really has bothered me alot is the racism I have heard in relation to this swine flu. We had a report yesterday about a 3 year old girl that was diagnosed with swine flu and they said that she had visited Tijuana. There are NO cases of swine flu in Tijuana or its state of Baja California. But because it is part of Mexico, right away the news services ran away with it.

Everyone should just be responsible and wash their hands frequently, if you are sick STAY HOME, and use a tissue when you cough or sneeze. And should you get sick, go to the doctor right away as the Tamiflu meds have been found to be highly effective. JMHO
