Hi, I have had periods of derealization/depersonalization. The best I can describe the feeling is by saying it feels like I am in a dream, everything looks very far away and sounds and touch sensations feel distant. The degree of severity varies, sometimes the feeling is barely there and sometimes I find it hard to concentrate on anything else. The important things to understand about it are that #1 IT IS NOT DEADLY OR DANGEROUS. This is often very hard to remember because the feeling is foreign and unpleasant and it is our natural human reaction to be frightened or disturbed by strange sensations. #2 IT IS TEMPORARY. This state is caused by your brain being temporarily overloaded with unprocessed information- perhaps stress related, or maybe you have simple been tiring yourself out lately. It is a residual state from when your brain works through loads and loads of information.
Things that have helped me to understand and or recover from this state are: • Taking fish oil capsules • NOT reading medical reports or articles about how “derealization can be a symptom of serious mental illness” etc etc. In some cases it is a possibility but for MOST people, it is a temporary state related to stress and/or anxiety • Exercise • Activity – Force yourself to get out in the world and IGNORE the feeling. If you ignore it, you deny the feeling the fear and pre-occupation on which it thrives. • Conquer your anxiety. However you do this, maybe through therapy, home work, cognitive behavioural training- it will be beneficial • Get enough sleep and do not consume large amounts of sugary foods.
Remember, it WILL go away.
*I started your own post so that it didn't get buried in a REALLY old post.* |
