It is just horrible.  mad   A huge jab hits my throat and continues it seems forever even though my rational mind tells me it can be no longer than a minute. I could be enjoying a calm afternoon or evening and this sequence of events happens. First the jab, then the gagging. After 34 years of having anxiety and depression in my life I know how not to let it frighten me yet not how to prevent it from happening. When the gagging stops the hideous giggling starts. blush I am embarrassed by the gagging and my body starts giggling. It is a nervous tic.

Have any of you experienced this? I would appreciate any suggestions you have.

Good Morning,

Wondering if you ever had your thyroid checked.  People with anxiety can have this problem; perhaps you should talk to your physician re therapy to help you deal with the gagging and the "giggling" after the event.

I would certainly recommend following up with this problem as I can understand how much it must be bothering you.

I take synthroid. I have a low, low thyroid. Doctors have always attributed the gagging to my anxiety. Anyone, terapist, whomever, who can help me to muzzle the nervous giggle will be an angel.*ME*

Hi ME, I have a friend who has a nervous giggle, and even makes a "Hmmmn" sound that kind of comes out of nowhere. It is a nervous tick, and honestly I find it charming. She is always a smiling happy person, so how could someone not find a giggle and a cheerful humming sound delightful?

She used to be self-conscious about it, but I think that once she stopped worrying about it, it started to resolve itself. We always think that something embarrassing we do is bigger than it really is. Like I said, I thought it was very cute, and just considered it so "Betty" (name changed)

When I saw her last, she didn't have the tick as much as I remembered.(we don't live close and she each other infrequently) Though I was happy for her, I really kind of missed it!

Try not to worry about this, and see what happens!

Hi Again, after some tech trouble, my computer, I return with 4 posts to answer. Evry1 pls forgive me.

Unlike Betty, mine is an obvious sign of deep rooted embarrassment. You have a good point. Usually I run from the room when I feel a gagging attack coming so I'm alone when my body emits this nervous noise. At times I have emitted this laughter in public when I hear a noise which makes me nervous such as a strangling noise.

What I don't understand, my doctor doesn't know either, is the effexor and remeron puts my disorder under control, the emotions, the symptoms, all but this one.

Good Morning and glad to hear your computer is up and running.

Remeron and Effexor are not members of the SSRI or SNRI family and most people on either medication seem to do well using it for either anxiety or depression.

Many people do not have the best of luck with the SSRIs myself included.

I can understand your anxiety going into overdrive when the gagging comes over you.  I have a tendency to feel anxious or sad and the overwhelming feels cause me to cry,  I just cannot help myself so I will often leave the area and let the tears out as I do not want anyone to see me. 

Wondering if you have ever seen a therapist for one on one counseling.  Coming here, seeing a therapist and medications have helped me.

Hi Kitt,

It is a gift to wake up in the morning and see ur reply and several others in other threads. My therapist is online. I got him through stressgroups.com and liveperson.com/experts. We have been talking last night about the gagging and my not running away from people. I used to have crying spells and similarly run away from people. My psychiatrist has a therapist he wants me to see. She has no openings until March 5. I am looking forward to meeting her.
