Hello everyone. I have been over on the GERD-Heartburn forum for several weeks because I just had a nissen fudoplication surgery to repair a hiatal hernia and deal with GERD. It has been 3 weeks since the surgery and all the stress of recovery and worrying about
what I can and mostly can't eat has really got me on edge.
I have dealt with anxiety off and on for the last 6 years or so and every time I get back into this rut I feel so disappointed with myself with just adds to the anxiety. It is so frustrating.
Most recently I got nauseous Sunday evening and that caused me to go into the panic mode, hot flashes, cold sweats, nausea, dizzy, etc. Since then I have been cycling in and out of that mode and can't seem to break the cycle. My doctor prescribed me xanax but worrying about
how I will feel if I take that causes me anxiety. I put a call in to a therapist but haven't got an appointment yet.
How do you break the vicious cycle? I will feel better for a few hours but then one little thing will just set me off again. I have been crying a lot this time around....I think my period is also due anytime now....and I have found that it actually helps a little, it seems to release some of the tension.....

Hi amanster and welcome to the A/P
I can certainly understand where you are coming from. Having a chronic condition and/or surgery is often a trigger for anxiety. We have had quite a few 'crossover' members who have been fighting anxiety brought on by ongoing health issues!
I also think that having any nausea would be something that could spark your panic very easily. I am sure that the fear of vomiting would be high for you after a Nissen...that could cause complications, ect...so the idea could actually bring on anxious nausea, or make it worse!
I have heard that Xanax is very good for treating acute panic, and brings about
a good/calm feeling, without many of the side effects of other anti-anxiety meds (SSRI SNRI's) The only downside as far as I have heard, is that there can be dependency issues with long term use...but for your temporary circumstance, I think you will be fine.:)
Therapy is a great option, and I am glad that you have looked into it. Until you can get in, we have a great Resource Guide with lots of good self-help links/ideas. Breathing and relaxation exercises are especially helpful when feeling anxious/panicked. Watch the instructional videos, then practice these daily, and see how you feel.:)
A positive mantra is also helpful. When you are feeling anxious, nauseous, ect. try telling yourself:
"It is only anxiety making me feel this way. I am okay."
I hope that some of this is helpful. Hopefully others will be on soon with more advice. Post here anytime with us, we are here to listen and support.:)

Thank you Scaredy Cat. It is good to hear the all of this is "normal" in a sense, as frustrating as it is.
