Dry mouth from anxiety??

Since this most recent bout of anxiety/depression started I have had dry mouth.  A "yucky" tast in my mouth and a dry feeling that leaves me needing to sip water throughout the day.  Is this common?  Could something else be going on?  Or do many of you get this?

The first month I had my panic attack, I carried a water bottle with me because of such bad "dry mouth" and I hate water :) That should tell you just how thirsty I was lol! And the metallic taste is aweful!!

I often get it. I find tic tacs or similar help and keeps my breath minty fresh ;) Some meds can cause dry mouth too.

belladonna's right.. When I tried celexa once I went through liter of water, very unpleasant. This all subsided for me at this point. Now I'm just dealing with the palpitations. The dry mouth does get better!

I haven't been on any meds (until I started the Xanax last night) since this whole dry mouth thing started so I can't blame it on that. I guess it's just my natural reaction to the anxiety/depression/stress this time. Just bothered me because I've never experienced it before.

Dry mouth is very common for people with anxiety and is also a side effect of many drugs.  The dry mouth will usually go away once your body adjusts to the meds.  Keep on sipping water or even hard candy works well.

Yup, my mouth always gets dry in times of high anxiety and panic. Reaching for water is the first thing I usually do when I feel anxious or in a state of panic.

You can also use Biotene toothpaste and mouth rinse to help. My dentist has me using them and they help as a constant dry mouth can cause tooth decay as the siliva has a lot to do with preventing too decay.

He said other mouth washes are not good for dry mouth but I forget what ingrdient makes them bad for it.

Thanks everyone :) The anxiety is getting a bit better - probably thanks to my new Xanax prescription - therefore so is the dry mouth. However, I'm starting on Anafranil this weekend and one of the most common side effects is dry mouth so the Biotene info is good to know! And it helped to know I didn't have to worry about an outlying medical condition, that the dry mouth was just anxiety. Thanks again!

I hope that it goes well.  I know that you have some reservations about it, but you got some solid advice on your earlier post,(it's so true that people tend to focus on the negative effects and not report on the positive ones!) and I also think that it is worth giving a try.  If it does not work out, then you can reexamine this with your doctor...but it may be a winner for you.:)

Hi AM,

I've had trouble with having dry mouth, and the metallic taste, since I started with my disorders 25 years ago. I am the one you will see walking around, whether in the grocery store, a wedding, or wherever, with something to drink. To me it's kind of like a security blanket. As long as I know I have it, i'm ok. If I go grocery shopping and forget a drink, I tend to open one up in the store and just pay for it when I get to the checkout. LOL!

Crazy things this anxiety does to people!
