Punched in the chest

Does anybody get a feeling in the chest like you got punched and it takes your breath away.. I get every so often and it scares me it's like my heart freezes up for a split second and takes my breath away.. By the time I check my pulse Its normal.. Just wondering if anybody else gets this feeling

Hi Camb3ll,

As long as you have had a recent check-up and your heart is considered healthy, then you can probably chalk this up to being an anxiety symptom.

I have had similar sensations and usually attribute it to an adrenaline rush. It could also be a PAC, or PVC which are usually benign...but it is always good to be checked by your doctor to be sure.

I have had many strange feelings in my chest/heart area that are anxiety related, and I know that many of our other members have as well. You will probably be hearing from them too, as they share their experiences.

Yep.

Finally someone describes it as the way I feel it! A punch in the chest and short feeling of breathlessness. It happens at least twice on a good day, and up to 20 times on bad days. But with no rhyme or reason. I do notice they tend to happen a lot when bending over, but not exclusively.

I have had the ekg's and doc visits because of it. It 's been chalked up to stress and anxiety. It's a scary feeling, I know. Especially when it happens in the middle of speaking. Ugh!

Ok I feel better knowing I'm not the only one.. I've had EKG and echo done and everything shows the old ticker as being fine.. But the punch in the chest feeling and the flip flop feelings are very scary.. Sets off the anxiety and panic instantly. Thanks for the feed back

Camb3ll Hello and welcome to HealingWell. It is notoriously hard to accept that palpitations etc are caused by anxiety not some life-threatening condition! But in the end once you do believe it, you're on the way to dealing with the anxiety. All your tests have turned out normal. But because heart arrhythmias, skipped beats etc do increase your anxiety or even bring on panic attacks, it's best to do everything you can to learn to deal with your anxiety. Everybody has heart palpitations at some point in their life. Sometimes it is just a heightened awareness of the hearts normal beating.   Occasional extra heartbeats are experience by most everyone.   Lack of sleep, stress and caffeinated beverages can make palpitations worse. People with anxiety and stress may describe a "rapid heartbeat" or "pounding" in their chest from their heart beating.
