Finally plucked up the courage to book a session with a CBT.
Can anyone tell me what goes on at your first session?

Hi
That is good to here CBT can be a great help and I know a lot of members have had great success with this therapy.
The first session will just be about
you getting to know the therapist and them getting to know you better. It may be a good idea to right down any questions you may have that way you will not forget anything you wanted to ask.
I am sure your first session will go smoothly let us know how things go.

Yeah!! Good on you P.C:)
Yes the 'intake' appointment will mostly be informational in nature...but you will be able to get a feel for your therapist and whether you think he/she is a good choice for you.
As Hibee said, writing down what you want to ask or say is a great idea. Often one of the first questions asked by the therapist is 'Why are you here today?' It is also one of the hardest questions if you ask me...so be prepared for it!! Think about
all of the issues that you would like to dicuss ahead of time.:)
Also, give yourself permission to stop and think of your answers before you speak. I used to have trouble with this and would end up just blurting out anything because I was afraid of awkward pauses. I realized that I did not need to feel pressured though and learned to say "Let me think about
that for a moment." This gave me time to organize my thoughts and say what I really wanted/meant to say!
Remember that CBT does take time and effort...but it is worth it! You may or may not have 'homework' after the first appointment...maybe some journal writing or worksheets, but I am sure that you will eventually be asked to do take home stuff...and the more you put into it...the quicker and better your results will be of course.:)
Let us know how it goes, and we will be here to cheer you on!
S.C.
