Hi lex and welcome.
I am sorry to hear that you have been suffering with anxiety for so long.:(
I do think that Larry has brought up a good point in regards to medication. It is no different than needing an Rx for a physical illness.
However, if you would like to try to conquer your fears without the use of meds, you could certainly give self-help and/or therapy a try first, if you have not already.
It is great that you already have a clear idea of what triggered your anxiety in the first place...that is an important step in treating it.
If an event such as this could bring on your anxiety...then working on changing your thinking patterns from negative and fearful...to positive and rational can help fight it.
Going through a treatment program such as CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) could give you the skills to have victory over your anxiety.
You can get a referral from your doctor for a qualified therapist. I can also recommend some books on health anxiety managment, since that seems to where your fears are focused. Let me know if you are interested, and I'll post the links for you.
