Increase in meds=stomach upset?

So, my doctor increased my Lexapro a couple weeks ago from 10mg to 20. I have been cutting them in half and easing into the new increase slowly by taking 15mg.  Over the past two weeks is as if I have my reflux back.  I take it at night because I feel it upsets my stomach, but my stomach stays upset all day long.  I think cutting the bigger pill in half and then in half again so I come up with 15 mg may be the problem.

I know my body has to get used to the new dose, but how long should I allow my stomach to be so upset before calling my doctor?  I have also had severe sore throat sense then; however it is allergy season and they may cause my throat irritation.  

Anyone go through this?

My reflux will cause my throat to be sore, it also will irritate my eustachian tubes to my ears and mimik allergies. I can't go one day without Prilosec over the counter. With it I can eat anything been on it over
20 years. "I know zero about Lexapro I only use xanax as needed".

Hi Virgogirl,

I have anxiety but not on meds though. My stomach problem has been with me for a few months before my appetite finally improves. Lost some weight too. It's been getting better for me so I'm sure you'll get better soon!

Upset stomach - super common symptom of anxiety. I had it so bad I felt puky all day. It's likely the anxiety and nothing else. After working on CBT for sometime my IBS or irritable bowel syndrome went away totally.

It will disappear once you get your anxiety levels down.

I am sorry to hear that your stomach problems have increased. Hopefully this is just a temporary side effect at your increase.

If it continues, or is not tolerable, I would go ahead and give your doctor a call and get his/her guidance.

Your doc may be able to give you something for your stomach until this subsides, or even suggest something to do nutrtionally or with a pro-biotic for relief.

I hope that you get the answers that you need soon.:)

Thanks all!  Scaredy Cat, seems you recall I had reflux surgery about a 1 1/2 years ago, so that is why my reflux like symptoms returning is so upsetting. 

I am still only doing 15mg of the Lexapro instead of the 20mg he wants me to do.  It's been 3 weeks and my throat is still raw (could still be allergies, but they have never impacted my throat like this before), and my stomach still feels like reflux is coming back. 

I manage 2 bank branch offices and June has a lot of employees on vacation, hard to get to the doctor.  I think I might just call him and then try to get in July if it continues.  The more difficult part is setting aside the worry until then........hmmmm, seems like the Lexapro is not working if I continue to worry :-)

Is your prescribing doctor aware of your stomach issue and surgery? (was is the fundo or wrap?)

I agree that you should have a consult with your GI just to be on the safe side...give him/her a call.

Once you have determined that you are okay gastro-wise, then you can talk to your presricbing doctor about how to proceed with your Rx.

It can be tricky and frustrating to determine what is going on between anxiety symptoms, medicine side effects, and just our normal health issues!

Keep working on getting it all figured out, so that you can feel as good as possible.:)
