Today, I'm feeling a little mopey so I decided to splurge on lunch and order a cheeseburger. When I walked in the store, though, the cashier started bagging my usual (unhealthy but cheap) two chicken strips and got out my cup for a Dr. Pepper. I've been having those two chicken strips and Dr. Pepper every day for so long that not a single cashier at that store asks what I want. I went ahead and bought the chicken strips too (they can't put food back after it's bagged, she would've had to pay for it), but it made me laugh.
I have a LOT of habits like that. They're not exactly compulsions - I mean, I don't think that if I had a corn dog instead of chicken strips someone would get hurt, or anything. I'm just kind of a creature of habit - I eat the same foods, park in the same spaces, walk through store aisles in the same order, etc. Even simple things - when eating, I take two bites of food, one sip of drink, two bites of food, one sip of drink.
These aren't bothersome compulsions, though. I know that nothing bad will happen if I don't do them. It just makes me uncomfortable to change my habits. It's much different than say, my pattern of checking the coffee pot, because if I don't check it properly I may have left it on and it will burn the house down and kill my puppies.
I'm just wondering if people with OCD are more likely to be creatures of habit, outside of their compulsions?
