Lexapro and Nexium

Hi,

My psychiatrist put me on 5 mg of Lexapro for my anxiety issues. Previously I was using Nexium 40 mg in the morning, 40 mg in the evening for my heartburn. The instructions state that Nexium can increase blood levels of Lexapro. I asked this issue to my doctor and he said: That warning is valid for only doses of 20 mg and higher, so you should not be concerned. I take Nexium at 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM and take Lexapro on 9:00 PM. I wonder, will Nexium really increase the side effects of Lexapro?

Hi Ukyo,

I do think that you can trust your doctor on this. Your dose of Lexapro is quite low, so I would not anticipate any issues.

If you would like to be sure, you can seek a second medical opinion, or even call your pharmacist. Pharmacists are really educated (of course) in medical interactions...and sometimes even catch things that prescribing doctors miss.

I hope that you get the answers that you need soon, and that your Rx's work for you the way that you want/need them to!

I am now on day 6 of 5 mg dose. I had severe heartburn for two days, but went away. After taking 5 mg at 9:00 PM, wake up around 5:00-6:00 AM with gas cramps. Simethicone seems to relieve it. I still have slight nausea in the mornings. Will these side effects fade away? As for the pros, I did not have any panic attacks, don't feel full after eating and belching went away :)

Yes , the side effects should let up, though it couild be a while...SSRI's can take anywhere from 4 up to 12 weeks for the med to build up and then level off to optimal levles in the body.

This can be frustrating and the reason why so many people go on this class of medication for a week or so, experience negative s/e's...and then quit without giving the Rx much of a chance.

Of course if anyone is experiencing and extreme reaction, then things will need to be addressed by the prescribing doctor...but mild side effects that can be tolerated will most likely run their course and go...leaving you with a medication that does just what it is intended for.;)

I am not sure that it would be quite as long...but it is still an adjustment for you system to go through. Also everyone is different, so that is a huge window of time. ..you could be on the shorter side of it...let's hope! :)
