I had this what they cal scintillating scotoma or visual migraine. I had 3 episodes of it already. Mine started november last year, it freaked the hell out of me, I didn't have the numbness thing but felt really odd while it's happening, it lasted 20mins but didn't have the headache that usually comes along the episode for some people. The second episode happened last april this year, I felt weak that almost gave me a full blown panic attack, I also noticed that I talked slow during that episode, no headaches after. The third one happened this june, I only got the shimmering zigzag-like pattern that also lasted for 20 mins.
It's better if you can get it checked out by a neurologist to rule out ischaemia. There are a lot of us who experience this scary thing so try to stay calm. It's most commonly caused by cortical spreading depression, a phenomenon or pattern of changes in the behavior of nerves in the brain during a migraine, or a change in blood flow in our brain. People with migraines often self-report triggers for migraines involving stress and a wide variety of foods. While monosodium glutamate (MSG) is frequently reported as a dietary trigger. Bright lights for some can also be a trigger.
