Practice, practice, practice.
A small pause is not a bad thing. Take a deep breath before you start to speak. Breath support will strengthen your voice, and give you some volume control..
Take a speech class. I have taught many international students, and their worry about their speaking skills is usually not as bad as they think it is. It's more concerning to them than it is to the listener.
Think about actively sending your voice to the other person. Too often we focus on what blocks communication, rather than the communication itself.
BTW, neither of the things you mentioned would have an effect on vocal skills. I promise.
