It can also just be nocturnal anxiety. This is not uncommon, and many peope actually have panic attacks immediately upon awakening.
If you can get calmed down with the help of some deep breathing...or with medication, like a fast acting A/d (benzodiazepine)...then you can be pretty sure this is what you are dealing with.
Also try doing breathing and relaxation exercises every night before bed to depcompress before you sleep.
