Alcohol and lexapro and welbutrin

I know this is a bit in advanced, but I turn 21 in December and I have been on both lexapro and welbutrin for about 5 months. During these five months I have only had alcohol once and I had a bit too much and became really emotional, scary sick and in bed the whole day after. I'm never an emotional drunk so this was a surprise.

My research has shown that mixing alcohol with any type of antidepressant can be exceedingly dangerous and may even cause death so what I am most worried about is whether or not I should even consider drinking for my 21st.

I have responded very well to both lexapro and welbutrin and have never been dependent on alcohol. Also, I am relatively healthy and run marathons. I am tiny so even a small amount of alcohol has an affect.

I guess my question is what should I do about my 21st birthday coming up. I am really looking forward to it, but I am quite worried about the mix with my prescriptions. If you could please give me any advice other than what I have read about it I would greatly appreciate it!

Hi Alpal, welcome, and happy almost birthday!

It is an individual decision whether to drink while on A/D medications or not. It is one of those things that can varying reactions due to a lot of factors.

One is the individual, some people can tolerate a drink occasionally while on their meds...others can't.

Also, the circumstances such as how much you have, whether you have eaten, your body weight ect., will come into play.

Alcohol can do a double whammy on your system. For one thing, it can render your meds less effective...and further more can exacerbate the effects of the alcohol, so you are left feeling really awful the next day if you over indulge.

Why not plan on going out, having a good time, but keeping things in check...maybe having one champagne toast for your birthday...and going with non-alcoholic drinks the rest of the evening?

You don't owe your companions any explanations. You can say that you choose to not drink for health reasons, if you feel the need to say anything.

Sometimes it comes down to making the best decision for how hard you have worked for the progress that you have made so far. If you are doing well on your current treatment plan, then why rock the boat if you don't have to. You can have a great celebration sans alcohol!:)

I agree with SC, enjoy your birthday and order non-alcoholic drinks like a  Virgin Daiquiri or Virgin Pina Colada and the list goes on. I do not drink as I take meds also but I love Diet Coke so I just match my friends a Diet Coke to their drink and that makes me the designated driver. turn

I have been on and off Zloft for awhie now. I would not suggest drinking while on A/D medication, but I personally do drink from time to time. At most 3 beers. Anything more and I feel terribly depressed the next day. I would say only have a drink or two though. Be careful but have fun. There are many ways to celebrate without drinking though. I personally love DD'ing. I get to go out, have a blast, spend minimal money and wake up feeling refreshed instead of depressed/anxious.

I say this coming from a ex drinker there is more to do then drink for your 21st be grateful, yes mixing both can be deadly and mess up your steps of getn better. No have a family dinner are something&get you some fruit punch you will be so happy you did,blessed health and joyful good steps God bless you......

When I turned 21 I was in VN, went to a place called the parachute club, sat at a table by myself had
a bottle of Jim Beam with me, mixed a drink and was sitting there when the thought hit me, this is
not illegal anymore. I put the bottle in my laundry bag and went back to base was in bed by 20:00hrs.
It was not fun anymore! There is no way I would mix AD meds with alcohol. Peace
