Weight gain on various meds?

I see a lot of the meds we take have "weight gain" as a possible side effect.

What "is" this weight gain? Does it cause water retention? Does it cause cravings so we change our diet? Does it actually cause lethargy so we cannot be as active?

The med itself cannot just manifest fat cells, so what, or how, (or where?) does this weight come from?

I gain weight rapidly when I'm on muscle relaxants, which is why I'm oh-so-very not fond of them. I don't notice a difference in my diet, but I do feel heavier (lethargic) and weaker...so perhaps I'm less active than customarily?

But I see so many of us posting about weight-related issues pertaining to meds, so it got me wondering just "how" this happens. Unless each tablet we swallow is 3,000 calories each, (!) there must be some logical breakdown of where this added weight is coming from. :P

Bah, I don't get it!
