Alas, without getting into the climate change debate, what California is experiencing is an unfortunate but natural thing. The Indonesia tsunami killed 100,000 people, and I'm sure many westerners (Europe and the U.S.) were motivated to supply assistance, many probably deeply empathized, but many more likely took little note.
When most people are unaffected, their day to day lives understandably take precedence. Last year, I believe, Texas and states in the area suffered horrific droughts, brought to us by a dome of high pressure, the same thing afflicting California, except we were told for Texas is was a natural and cyclic phenomenon. Alas, as unpleasant as it is, so is the one in California.
My heart goes out to you and your fellow Californians just as it did to Texas et al. You pulled the short straw this year, as Texas did previously, and Indonesia to a horrible degree did years before that. Too much fear being marketed for effect, weather, crime, health, etc. Every time we're told that in my city, the temperature broke a new high record, I find the climatological data for here that proves otherwise, often the highest temps were in the 1930's. Not sure why they keep making claims for broken records.
I pray that a normal amount of rain returns to California, we've been through a few droughts, never had I so welcomed a rainy day.
