Okay, the more I read, the more I feel you're being put in a precarious and inappropriate situation....not to mention, it's sounding dangerous. I think you know that, too, and your palps may have been your body's way of sending you a message that you needed to get out of there?
These are just my personal ramblings, so if it's me who seems out of line, please forgive me.
So, just my thoughts here, okay? Now, if it were me, and those were the work conditions, I would be very wigged out and I would not feel safe. I am not trying to scare you, but I am hoping your guard is up and that you are being diligent.
If I were asked to stay 20 minutes late, I may understand. Having that turn into 2 hours,--plus the extenuating and personal circumstances that are exuding in the air,-- hun, something just sounds not quite right.
Whether or not you are attracted to lawyers, (or dog groomers, or engineers, or rock climbers), is irrelevant. What is relevant is that this is a work situation, this is supposed to be a professional environment.
I am not trying to make light of his personal/private/professional problems. But it is not fair, nor legitimate, to drag you into those conflicts and impose such an,....(I'm trying so darn hard to be tactful here)...."unusual"....set of circumstances on you. But if he's emotionally unstable, angry, hurt,....and for whatever reason, he's got a weapon in the office he felt compelled to show you,...these do not add up to a safe workplace. (Unless you work for BRINKS and drive an armoured car with cash in the back). Oh heck, even then,....
If you're concerned about your electrolytes,--until you get an answer, drink some Gatorade and eat a banana....but I gently ask that you at least consider taking inventory of this situation.
M.
REASON FOR EDIT: I'm trying to find gentle words....
