Good Morning Mindy,Here is what I found: "Using carbamazepine and diazepam(Valium) together may alter the effectiveness of diazepam (Valium). If you take both medications together, tell your doctor if diazepam is not effective. You may need a dose adjustment if you take both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor."
Carbamazepine and Valium are not in the same class of medications but do have some things in common. Carbamazepine (tegretol) is an anticonvulsant that is also used to stabilize ones mood. It has many off -label uses. Benzodiazepines are anxiolytics which can also be used as anticonvulsants, sedatives & relaxants. So probably the biggest thing they have in common is anti-seizure use.
As long as you are taking the Valium to help with your anxiety the adjustment in the Carbamazepine should be ok. It is good to know you are feeling better on the Valium therefore it is working.
I know you are afraid. I understand well your fears, I am on chemotherapy and many of these high potency medications interact with one another or each one can have some of the same side effects so you fear getting hit with a "whole lot" of pain, nausea, diarrhea but I have found that my body react in it's own way and though the times have been tough I have managed.
My email is open if you have any questions re fear of your dx.
Kindly,
Kitt
