Hi Beth and welcome!
I am sorry to read of your anxiety and panic issues that are affecting your work, school and sleep. It is not unusual for a trigger, such as the illness/loss of a loved one to indeed 'flip the switch' and anxiety results.
It is good that you have been reading along for awhile...so you are somewhat aquainted with the forum. Have you had a chance to look into our Resources on the main page? (first thread)
In it, you will find a whole section on self-help coping skills for anxiety and how to stop a panic attack. There are also informative articles, book recommendations and more. Look around there when you can, and try some of the techniques.
As far as medication goes...an SSRI like you tried can bring about undesired side effects, but they ususally do phase out after initial the initial start up time.
You could try another med within the same drug class, or ask your doctor about the possible use of a benzodiazepine to take as needed for acute stress/attacks.
This class of med ususally does not have the side effect issues, but can carry a risk of dependency that you and your doctor will have to discuss, and see if it would make a good choice for you. (there are also other options to read up on such as beta blockers, antihistamines, ect..)
Finally, I would recommed therapy no matter what you decide in terms of medication...as I feel that everyone can benefit from this treatment option!
I can't tell you what a difference it made for me, and how I found relief from (daily) panic attacks! Again, talk with your doctor about a possible referral for a therapist.
Keep posting with us as well. Support is key in recovery!
