I'm new to this site. I was diagnosed with panic disorder about a year & a half ago. I started taking Celexa but gained weight & decided I didn't want to be a slave to these meds all my life. I can pretty much handle it on my own most of the time. However, whenever I introduce any new meds to my system, they always trigger attacks resulting in fear, nervousness & rapid or thumping heart rate. I was recently diagnosed with Allergic Rhinitis. I was prescribed Flonase & it triggered panic. Have heard negative things about Benadryl & Claritin as well. What can a person in my situation take without feeling these effects??? I feel like everything messes with my serotonin levels. How am I supposed to get rid of this condition if I react this way to all of these meds? I've never had nasal allergy issues before. Please help! BTW: I'm a 35 yr old female with ocular hypertension as well, so that always make it trickier to find meds that won't affect my eye pressure at the same time.

I am having serious allergy and sinus issues right now too. If I take Mucinex, it races my heart, and gives me panic. I can take benadryl, but it makes me sleepy. The nose sprays give me a headache. I don't like taking new meds either, because I always seem to have all the side effects..because my anxiety has gone to health anxiety, and I am a half hypochondriac. Talk to your doctor and there are different options for you to take. I myself am 40, and just very recently have had sinus and allergies almost every month. I think my anxiety actually helps make it worse honestly. ;

Thank you for your reply. I've thought about taking Benadryl at night. I figure, if its only side effect is sleepiness, than it can help out a little AND help me sleep. Worth a shot right? Hope you can find something that works for you.

one of the veteran members here told me to take it at night, because if it makes me sleepy, why not get some sleep. Benadryl will help with some anxiety as well. I'm getting my allergies under control I hope, with the help of my doctor. I am grateful, that I have a terriffic doctor, she listens to me and never makes me feel like I'm crazy. Please do check with your doctor though, because I'm not sure if any medication your on, would interract with the benadryl. Best wishes.

Hi Chuchi and welcome.:)

Have you considered any holistic helps for your allergy issues? If antihistamines are a trigger for your panic...perhaps you could treat your symptoms at least, in a natural ways without using meds?

A saline nasal spray, or a netti pot rinse may bring relief. Can you ask your doctor about any alternatives such as these?

Have you also checked in with the
Allergy Forum here? The members there may have some great ideas!

Hi there, and thank you for your reply! Sadly, I don't have insurance at this time. I did call back the urgent care where I was seen & diagnosed, and spoke to a nurse about alternatives. Saline sprays have no side effects, so I purchased one yesterday. I'm hoping it will help with regular rinses. I'll also check in with the allergy forum as you suggested. Thank you! ;)

Just yesterday someone ask a question similar to yours.  I recommended the Neti pot as I bought one for my daughter this spring and it has truly helped her with allergies.  She does not like to take medications..............
