Trazodone

Hi all,

So, I made the mistake of googling Trazodone when taken with Zoloft and all I saw were a bunch of articles saying that people shouldn't do it. They said people shouldn't take both because you can get a rare and fatal thing called Serotonin Syndrome because too much Serotonin can be produced. I didn't sleep well last night. I kept wondering why my doctor would prescribe this if this is true.

I've been taking Zoloft about a month and told my doctor that sometimes I get restless at night and I wake up almost every hour so she prescribed Trazodone at 50 mg and told me to start with a half pill and go up to a full pill if I need it and to take it as needed. I have taken 1 and a half pills in about 3 weeks. I'm thinking of calling her and asking if I really should be taking something that could make me so sick.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I probably won't be able to call to ask until tomorrow and who knows if I'll get an answer then.

When I take 50mg of trazadone, my BP is lower.. Have noticed this in the very beginning

Oh no..You did not freak me out cballer. I'm concerned and will discuss this with my P tomorrow since this is my first appt since I've been taking lexapro. I've taken Traz in the past and more than 50mg and had no problems whatsoever (with prozac/paxil) but I made a copy of a brief report and will see what he has to say.

You may still want to talk to your doctor to ease your mind..I will report back tomorrow after my appt!

Is this one doctor that is prescribing both Rx's...in other words, he/she is aware that you are taking both meds? Trazadone is not an SSRI, but shares enough characteristics that make the chemical make up of the two meds similar.

To the best of my knowledge, prescribing Trazadone with an SSRI is done...

...and seratonin syndrome is very rare, and is ususally seen in extemely high doses of meds.

...but it is a good idea to talk to your prescribing doctor about your concerns, to be on the safe side.

I'm back from my P and asked about serotonin Syn. Showed him what I copied from internet.. I have no reason to be alarmed. He was telling me about the research done and this is no way near an overload. 50mg has such a tiny amt and you are in no danger or I wouldn't prescribe it. He's right, like I said I've had trazadone on 3 other past anxiety bouts and all worked out well..I'm relieved. I have OCD Health anxiety.

I have taken up to 3) 50mg's at one time with Paxil and no ill effects whatsoever..the other times, 2 with prozac and now 1) with lexapro because I am on .25 klonopin too for sleep- Lord forbid, I slept ok the last time when I took lexapro (probably after 6 weeks) and it's going on 4 weeks now and it's not working too well but I'm able to function..I pray to god it kicks in big time and gives me my sleep back without any meds.
If I slept through a whole night I would consider it a miracle..LOL, I usually wake after 3-4 hours and a few after but as long as I'm able to return to sleep, I'm not concerned. When I can't, the next day I face more anxiety and jittery- I can tell cuz I jump when I hear a sound... I can get by with 5 hours. I wonder what it feels like to get 8
