Hi Schoening and welcome.
I am so sorry that you are currently going through this.:( I have had some similar sensations due to anxiety/sleep issues...and I know that it is miserable.
I am glad to hear that you are pursuing this from a physical standpoint, and getting checked out by a doctor. That is a logical first step.
The ENT can do an evaluation, checking and ruling out anything from a medical perspective. Also he/she may make a recommendation for a sleep study as D.S. mentioned.
If you have an all clear from your physical exams...then you can safely go on to treat this as anxiety issue.
For now, assuming anxiety is at least playing a part in this...here are some excellent coping skills that you can practice before bedtime to help your body and mind to relax. If you are awakened with symptoms, these exercises can also be used to help calm you down and get back to sleep.
