Does anyone take Benztropine (Cogentin) for anxiety? I've google'd it and found nothing really? Would like to hear if it worked or not and any side effects that were troublesome? I have the data sheet from the pharmacy about it, but I like to hear from real people. My physic NP just prescribed this to me today for my anxiety and put me back on Abilify thank god on that one cause the zyprexa was making me want to cry 24/7.

Anyway, any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hi

Benztropine (Cogentin) is an anticholinergic drug used to treat muscle-rigidity, restlessness, and stiffness. It is sometimes used, along with antipsychotics, in treating schizophrenia. It is believed that the risk of tar dive dyskinesia, which exists as a side-effect of various antipsychotics, can be reduced with the use of benztropine. I would be interested to find out how this works for you keep us posted.

IDK that any of our active members are currently using this med. Did you do an archive search here? You can do so by hitting the SEARCH icon (upper right blue toolbar) and inputting key words.

...this med is also used to treat Parkinson's...so you may want to check with that forum here for more general information.

Thanks for the replies, I did take one last night and it made me really sleepy but it did lessen my anxiety. Not sure it is something I will stick with though if it is going to make me sleepy all the time, maybe it is just a side effect and will wear off in time. I'll keep this updated as time goes on to let you all know if it works on my anxiety.

Since this is a powerful muscle relaxant type of med...it is going to have a sedation like effect.

I read that most people take their dose in the evening towards bedtime.

I was not able to find much information on this Rx used 'off label' for anxiety...

Does your NP consult with a psychiatrist for precribing meds?

The NP that prescribed these is a Physic NP, it is all he does is prescribe mental health drugs. He gave rx'd me 2 a day as needed, so far I haven't taken one today. Will take one a little later after I cook dinner so in case it makes me sleepy again I can just go to bed, lol.
