i have not spoken of my brother, that i am aware of on this forum. i have a few times on depression forum. i did today but this is not verbatim. my brother has a severe schizo- affective disorder. i can empathise, i had it. he goes out every day looking for his fear. he does not know what or when etc about it. he only knows that it terrifies him and he must find it. he has been doing this a long time. mum is very unwell medically and can't keep up with my bro. after much coersion he has finally allowed the treating team to assess him for suitability to enter a CCU. (community care unit-long term psych) obviously a spot must come up first, an assessment and then movement. he is 28 years of age, with no life experience living in a codependent situation with his other brother and mum. i am glad that he has signed to go in volunatrily as it would be counter productive for him. i know the psych system well, thus i am looking out for him. his stay will be a minimum, from the rumblings of his treating team to be six months, can be up to 12 months, obviously treating outcomes apply.

i am hoping that he gets the care he needs. i sure wish i had such a team looking out for me back in my days. i was just shoved in the 2 hard basket and was left to rot in a crisis center, then a men's shelter for two and a half years. sorry some negativity. i get a little prickly, just sometimes that all the care is given to my younger bro', but for me i was kicked out and left to fend for myself. no visit, no ph call, nothing. death would have been nicer.

so for my bro' it is a waiting game. i hope it is soon for him. i seen him a month or so ago, and he was clearly not well at all. keep ya posted.

I'm sorry turtle. This is a very tricky situation. You are a brave soul for enduring so much, yet still helping your family there & your family here on HW.

Hi HT

Thanks for sharing your brothers story I am pleased he is going to get the help he needs and he is lucky to have you to look out for him. I also understand that you have been through so much and did not get the help that must of been really tough for you. I just want you to know that you are a very valued member of HW and we are all here to support you I also admire you for being able to reach out to others and offer them support.

thank you for sharing that story with us HT. I'm happy your brother will be getting medical attention...and hopefully soon. I'm sorry you had such a bad go of it too. You have overcome quite a bit to be with us here today.

I happy that your brother has your watchful eye on him, but I am sad that this brings up some yucky feelings for you. It is unfair that you feel like you had to fend for yourself back then, but you don't anymore because we are all here to support you now, just as you do for us!

Dear turtle, I am really sorry to hear this <3 It is sure very tough, but you are a very nice person to care for your brother.

We are here to support you no matter what, even though just on internet. And you are a great support for us all <3

First of all...I am sorry to hear of the awful experiences of your past. I only know bits and pieces...but enough to know that you have virtually transcended what can be expected of a person with the challenges that were set before you.

You are an amazing testament to what one can do with the use of their strength, perseverance and character as a positive person.

You did not give up on yourself, or hope...and wouldn't allow anyting to bring you down for very long. I often an amazed at the qualities I see you bringing here to our community. I mean that with all sincerity.

With all that you have been through and overcome...it is hard to see things come a bit more easily to your brother, I know. (I have a similar, yet different dynamic with my sister)

However, what an advocate you can be for him. He does sound as if he needs you very much in his corner.

I will keep you both in my positive/healing thoughts....as well as your whole family.

Thanks for sharing and keep us updated as you can/wish.

Hey HT,

Thank you so much for sharing the story of your brother and yourself with us. I had a really good friend with schizophrenia when I was younger. Is that anything like schizo-affective disorder? I'm unsure. My friend meant a LOT to me, so I find myself really having a heart for this situation.

I can sense that you are having some pain in this too, but just know that I was in a similar situation to you in which my parents asked me to leave the house at age 15. Well, screamed at the top of their lungs for me to leave the house..... :( It's not easy being alone in the world, but it definitely made me a bit tougher on the outside and a bit softer on the inside. Much like a TURTLE! Ha... wasn't even trying for that there! :)

I am going to keep your bro in my thoughts and prayers and you too. :-)

You have been through an awful lot and ditto to everything SC said.
It is obvious that mental health care has improved some from when you were in need until now when your brother has the need. However would you agree that it has not come far enough?

thanks guys. cheers tma & weary. nowhere near enough. not in terms of recognition, de-stigmatizing, education and service provision. let alone funding!!!! makes me a mad turtle. :( a snapping one!!!!

I have a very good friend who has a very challenging life with a schizophrenic adult son here in the states. The support IS NOT THERE! She is fortunate enough to be well off and STILL THE SUPPORT IS NOT THERE!
Understanding is key.

My best to you and he. I hope he gets a spot in the hospital with no trouble. It's a problem in the states. There's a mass shortage of resources for treatment of this nature.

Sometimes I'd like treatment like this for myself.
