Scared about the possibility of a new job

Hi everybody!
As some of you know, I lost my job of 10 years a few weeks ago.
I'm more concerned because this time of year it's difficult to find a new one with the holidays approaching. Well I just got a call yesterday asking me to go to an interview on Monday! And there's a real good possibility for me to get that job. Buuuut, now I'm scared to death! Just the thought of the car ride there (just a 10 min ride!) is making me panic! See,I usually go to workwith a friend, and I had a very flexible schedule, which meant that if I was feeling a bit off, I could wait to calm myself down before actually leaving my house. That will be impossible to do now, plus I will not have my coworkers friendly faces waiting for me at the office. I actually have to pretend(at least) that I'm ok at this new place!

I know I should be very grateful that I have this opportunity, but I'm going crazy and wishing Monday doesn't get here!

First of i'm sorry to hear you lost your job of 10yrs that must of been hard as it sounded like you were supported there by your work colleagues.

Good to hear that you have an interview on Monday I wish you good luck for that and understand your anxiety. Could you do a practice interview over the weekend? That's what I used to do before going for an interview and I found that if I felt prepaired my anxiety was less just a suggestion.

I'm sorry you feel this way. I have thought about getting a job a few times, but have then considered how my anxiety would place into things and I've back away from the idea. I'm sure it won't be easy at first, but you'll make new friends fast and once you meet some people you feel like you can trust, you can share with them during your anxious times.

As CT mentioned...we all have moments where we have to 'fake it till we make it!' I have had panic attacks in front of large groups of people before...who never knew what was happening! Use your slow breathing and postive mantras to get you through!

Repeating a phrase such as this will help.

"I can get through this interview by using my coping skills."

Also as Hibee mentioned...mentally practicing the interview and using positive visualization will ensure that you are prepared and calmer on Monday morning.

Be sure to arrive a little early, to that you don't feel rushed. Use 10 minutes or so in the car before going in to practice your breathing and other techniques for relaxaing.

If you feel pressured by a question, and are afraid of blurting out something wrong/awkward, ect...try this trick.

Simply say..."That is a good question, let me think about that for a moment."

This gives you time to pause, think...and then speak!

It also lets them know that you are a critical thinker with good cognitive skills.:)

You have gotten some stellar advice here. I've talked myself out of a job because I don't believe in myself. What a mistake.

This is what I want you to do. Tomorrow, find a friend to drive you. This way, there is no concern about parking, etc. And I think the comfort of a trusted friend will keep you relaxed. I had my dad drive me once or twice for an 2nd and 3rd interview since I was unfamiliar with the area. This took away so much stress. Years prior, I had an interview and couldn't find the place.

Also, figure out what you're going to wear. Print a copy of your resume and cover letter. Do all you can and do it early for preparation.
