This has happened many times before, and it really is started to freak me out. Last night it happened again while cooking dinner, suddenly my neck ( it's usually the neck area) started burning, bad.  I continued making dinner and sat down with my family to eat but the burning was getting worst so I looked in the mirror and I had many criss cross scratches on my neck and it was very red. After about an hour the redness went away and I'm left with these scratches. Has this happened to anyone else? It's usually three long scratches but last night it was a bunch of criss cross ones.

I can make an educated guess. Maybe the burning you're feeling in your neck is your face start to flush and as it goes away, you're left with a bit of a splotchy look. I have a friend who used to get so anxious during speeches in college that her neck and chest would flush and she'd say it felt like she was on fire and then as she would calm down she would literally be left a splotchy mess. Are you feeling anxious when you feel the burning in your neck?

Have you started using a new soap/lotion/perfume? Maybe you're having some sort of allergic reaction. Does it itch at all?

Hi Deb-

Are the marks left from you touching/scratching it? The natural reaction to a sensation is to touch/rub/scratch the area to get it to go away.

There wouldn't be scratches unless something physically scratched it. Do you have a pet that sleeps by your neck by chance, like a cat? Just trying to help you figure it out.

New Rx, or increase of med?...or as Park mentioned...a reaction to a new product?

Any changes at all that you can identify? Have you been wearing a scarf during the day? Turtleneck sweater? Both natural and synthetic fabrics can scratch delicate skin.

Is your house haunted? I'm not trying to be a weirdo, just trying to look at it from a different perspective. I watch a lot of ghost shows and I hear a lot about the 3 scratches. I personally would say it's probably not that lol but one never knows!

Last night I was scratched on my wrist pretty bad, it burned for awhile and still have the scratch today. This is really freaking me out,.

My skin is super sensitive and I'm convinced it reacts if the wind blows on it just right! ;)

I'm not sure if I can relate specifically, but I've had marks on my skin which come in various forms, shades, appearances. I get them mostly on my face, neck, chest, and sometimes my back. Flushing can cause bumps to appear on the skin and perhaps it's manifesting in delineated patterns for you?

Do the scratch marks hurt or are they painful in general or to the touch? Ever had anything similar before? If it persists, perhaps consult your derm or PCP... If it dissipates over time, however, perhaps it's just..... (wait for it),.....one of those things!?
