Yes I wanted to get something white too but after many hours of consultation and speaking to other people who have had both porcelain and gold fillings, I decided to get gold because it's the most durable filling. The tooth decay was close to the nerves and I didn't want to get a root canal so I chose gold as less tooth reduction was needed for the restoration when compared to porcelain. I also have grinding/clenching habits and gold was the only material that could withstand extreme bite force in the back molar.
Gold is not amalgam (mercury). Gold fillings are made of 75% gold and other alloys like silver and copper. I may be having a reaction to these other alloys. I don't know. I have spoken to many people who work in dentistry and everyone said gold was the best durable material if esthetics are not a concern.
If however these symptoms do not go away I will have to consider porcelain crowns. I don't know how long they would last for me though! You're lucky you don't have clenching habits. I need a mouthguard to protect my teeth.
