D.S.
The basic pricipal is learning how to recoginize and change negative/fearful thinking patterns into positive/productive ones.
The premise is that changing your thoughts can and will change your mood.
Here is a short synopsis from the Mayo Clinic's site:
Cognitive behavioral therapy is a common type of mental health counseling (psychotherapy). With cognitive behavioral therapy, you work with a mental health counselor (psychotherapist or therapist) in a structured way, attending a limited number of sessions. Cognitive behavioral therapy helps you become aware of inaccurate or negative thinking, so you can view challenging situations more clearly and respond to them in a more effective way.
Cognitive behavioral therapy can be a very helpful tool in treating mental disorders or illnesses, such as anxiety or depression. But not everyone who benefits from cognitive behavioral therapy has a mental health condition. It can be an effective tool to help anyone learn how to better manage stressful life situations.

it is an old school technique that is an effective treatment for many. obviously it has evolved, but in it's day it was about
the white board and over emphasis on statistical analysis.

Plain and simple.... It is talk therapy to help you express what you feel and think and take the negative thoughts and replace them with positive ones. It takes some time but it has been such a life saver for me. If you are thinking of doing it I would say YES YES YES YES to doing so.

I am very eager to know about
it as well but therapy feels scary to me as I am avoiding my therapist for a long time and it hurts me only I know.

Cilly,
This may be a good option for you then...the work feels pro-active...with little 'down-time' (wondering what to say) or awkward conversations like might happen in conventional talk therapy.
We also have self-help/on-line versions of this in our Resources if you'd like to have this alternative option.
Let me know if you need the links.:)
